β¨ οΈAn Emotional Outlet Through Poetry β¨οΈ
Its been a little while since I completed my MA in Psychotherapy. During the final months one of our challenges was to create a negotiated assessment, part of which I wrote a poem.
Poetry has been an outlet of mine for many years, a place to release thoughts, feelings and emotions. This poem is the epitome of my life from birth to the present day and everything in between.
It took me a long time and a lot of courage to decide to share it with you all. I feel vulnerable in being so deeply honest with you all about my life experience. But it also feels an important step in transparency as a therapist that you know why and how I got to where I an now.
Thank you for taking the time to read this far, I hope you enjoy my words.

Life: By Mary O'Sullivan
April the 22nd 1970 a little baby was born
At 6.50am it was a bright and early morn
Big brown eyes ready to see the world
What was in store for this beautiful little girl
Attachment styles from Ainsworth and Bowlby
Were they watching did they see me
Upon siblings being born into my world
That's when I began to hide the little girl
Down in the bluebells I would be
Little did I realise it was wild therapy
The phenomena of Boubers I- En
The flowers & bumble bees offering deep connection
I kept on going my sparkle trying not to dull
Teenage years becoming darker and sullen
Eriksons stages of life not figuring anywhere
There was no one for me that seemed to care
I walked blindly through my adult years
The weight of the pain fell heavy with tears
All I ever wanted was to be loved
Anything would help even a hug
No one gave a sh*t this was clearly evident
I had no idea where my place was meant
So much love I had to give and more
This was who I am truly at my core
The only person looking out for me
Is absolutely at my core I see
I donβt need anyone else to fulfil my needs
I can regrow what I need planting my own seeds
And so began the journey of finding myself
Oh boy what I found and now Iβm full of wealth
The love I have given to me myself and I
Allows the tears to come and I can cry
The realisation of Eriksons stages shocked me to my core
However, it awakened something within, wanting to know more
The emotions and feelings I knew nothing about
Then they started to make sense, I wanted to scream and shout.
I am the one who truly listens to me
I am the one who can absolutely see
Carl Rogers conditions of worth no longer a measure
Because I now see me I am a treasure
Opening a vortex deep within, feeling a new knowing
My soul started to shine; in the world I began glowing
The learning from the counselling course continued
I found myself becoming less and less subdued
The growth has come from personal development
Through all of the work Lindsey Moses has sent
Digging deep within to find out more
What a journey of discovery to self-explore
Has it been easy absolutely not
Lots of blood sweat tears and snot
But it's been worth it in every way
Learning something of myself every day
Carl Jungs the wounded healer I became
Listening, seeing and being with individuals the same
My clients unique with their own story to tell
Sitting with them allowing them to be at their will
Then low and behold the wild speaks to me
The MA, I was never doing, but little did I see
This absolutely amazing space would bring out more the real me
I am the closet I have ever felt to being free.
This freedom the wild has brought into my life
Letβs me know Iβll be ok with challenges, trouble and strife
It's how I deal with it to maintain the calmness for me
No matter what I am now in control of my destiny
Donβt get me wrong thereβs a long way to go
But at least now Iβve opened my eyes I know
I am living my life the best I can be
I take my strength and courage from all around like a tree
And as that baby all those years ago born
The in-between of life I may mourn
But here I now stand strong as a tree
And now who you all see is truly me
