Have you ever noticed…
how often your mind is scanning?
Noticing what might happen next.
Checking your phone.
Who’s texting me?
What do they want now?
Rehearsing and replaying conversations.
Wondering if someone is upset.
Thinking about tomorrow while today is still happening.
Planning your reply before the other person has finished speaking.
Watching Netflix while scrolling.
Reading one more article.
Watching one more news clip.
Listening to one more podcast.
Looking for one more answer.
As I’ve been sitting with this over the last few days, I’ve realised I’ve spent loads of my life scanning.
Scanning people.
Scanning for danger.
Scanning for what might happen next.
Scanning for the next thing that might finally make me feel OK.
Looking back, I can even see it in my experience with addiction.
I wasn’t really looking for another drink.
I was looking for relief.
For a few moments where I didn’t have to stay so alert.
I don’t think that’s unique to addiction.
I think many of us spend our lives reaching for something…
our phones,
the news,
food,
work,
exercise,
another podcast,
another course,
another answer…
hoping that the next thing will finally give us permission to rest.
For years I thought this was just who I was.
An overthinker.
Someone who couldn’t switch off.
Now I’m beginning to wonder if it wasn’t my personality at all.
Maybe I’d simply become exceptionally good at scanning.
And if you’ve spent years scanning for what might go wrong…
of course stillness feels unfamiliar.
Maybe you’re not broken.
Maybe you’ve just learned to relate to life this way.
And maybe…
there’s another way.
