Prevention is key!
This patient presented with digital deformities and poor circulation. Due to the position of the toes, increased pressure and friction from footwear had led to areas of skin breakdown.
While these wounds may appear small they should never be ignored. Even minor rubbing or knocks can cause further damage and in patients with poor circulation healing is often slower and the risk of infection is increased.
The affected areas were dry with scab formation present. While this can be a positive sign of healing the skin remains vulnerable and can easily break down again if the underlying pressure and friction are not addressed.
A Doppler vascular assessment was carried out to assess blood flow to the feet. The affected areas were cleansed and dressed and semi-compressed felt padding was applied to offload pressure away from the vulnerable sites.
Offloading is a key part of treatment. By reducing pressure and friction we can help protect fragile skin, support healing and reduce the risk of further breakdown.
Early intervention is often the difference between managing a small wound and treating a much larger problem later on.
DON’T IGNORE IT.
