When you wake up in the morning with overwhelming levels of anxiety and you know that you have to get up and get on with the day, it can be tough!

Giving yourself a few minutes (if you can spare at least ten minutes, even better!) to settle with the body and the breath, allowing yourself to recognise what's going on for you, without judging and without needing to avoid or push away the thoughts, feelings and body sensations, you can come away feeling calmer, more in control and ready to move forwards into the day.

This is not to say that the anxiety will necessarily disappear but it somehow feels more manageable and less overwhelming.

Experiencing anxiety can be stressful and it can take it's toll on our wellbeing. Having ways to manage without needing to ignore or judge our experience is important.

Mindfulness practices can support us to continue with the things we need and want to do in life.

Learning ways to understand and express ourselves can be a really important element of talking therapy.
You might not know how you feel and you might not know what to say.
Within the confidential space with a counsellor, you can explore and try out words and feelings to see if they fit and make sense to you.

The Bafflement of Mindfulness!

If you find yourself saying things like "I can't do it", "I can't stop my mind from thinking!", it can be tempting to think that mindfulness isn't for you!

However, this often happens when we put expectations on ourselves believing that mindfulness is all about stillness, calm and peacefulness.

It can be useful to understand that whilst mindfulness meditation practice can bring moments of inner peace and calm, it can also be incredibly challenging at times because when we practice mindfulness we are bringing our attention to what's happening within our mind and body - And, if we've never done this before, it can be quite a shock, which is why learning to offer ourselves non-judgement, curiosity and kindness is so important.

I personally find mindfulness meditation incredibly useful. It's not always easy but can be necessary if we want to feel more in control of our mind (thoughts), body (emotions) and actions (behaviour).

The mind will pull you in all kinds of directions because that's what minds do!

The mind constantly creates thoughts and images. Some pleasant, some unpleasant, some neutral. Noticing this is mindfulness!

What we can learn to do through mindfulness training, like the Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course, is to learn with a teacher to become more aware of the patterns of thoughts and feelings and how these play out in our lives.

We can feel empowered to make healthy choices for ourselves and mindfulness practices can support in relieving anxiety and emotional distress.

If you are baffled by mindfulness and you don't know where to start, message or email me to arrange a taster session.

Mindfulness meditation isn't just about finding peace and calm.
We can learn to better manage difficulties and challenges in life.

By practicing mindfulness meditation, we can learn to be with difficult thoughts, body sensations and emotions.

Life isn't always easy. Mindfulness meditation offers us a way of taking good care of ourselves.

Gentle nudges.

If the big things in life feel too overwhelming, try looking for things that bring a smile or a feeling of hope.

Flowers in bloom are an example that can offer us moments of joy, peace and hope.

Take a few moments to pause, taking in the colours and the scent. Noticing how the mind and body feel as you do this.

And, as you continue with your day, perhaps paying gentle attention to how the body feels when you remember this moment throughout the day and finding new ways to take a pause and feel the sense of joy or perhaps a lightness.

Gentle nudges.
