I’ve deliberately waited until the Courts have sentenced the Hull funeral director, giving him 20 years in prison, before writing anything.

My first thoughts are with the families who have been affected by the events that took place in Hull. No sentence or words can undo the hurt that they will have had to endure. It is only right that the criminal courts have held him to account for his crimes.

The last two years have generated a great deal of public interest into the actions of this business, which operated outside of the scrutiny of the NAFD or SAIF.

Whilst these trade associations have no enforcement powers, they do prove to the community that the business has voluntarily undergone a rigorous inspection of their facilities and business practices. These include how the deceased is cared for, how ashes are managed, and how charitable donations are handled. A condition of the membership is adhering to a code of conduct - a breach of which would result in serious sanctions or having membership revoked.

Legacy Funerals in Hull wasn’t a trade association member at the time of the police becoming involved. They weren’t independently inspected. They weren’t held to account. They didn’t have their business practices scrutinised. He didn’t make mistakes, they were deliberate acts of negligence.

As a result, a rogue individual has dragged the funeral profession into the gutter, and tarnished the reputation of honest, hard working and caring professionals, of which I feel that we are industry leading. I am forever impressed by my staff and colleagues for the professionalism, kindness and compassion that they show.

To the public, I can only thank you for continuing to entrust us. If you ever wanted to see for yourself how your loved one is cared for, you only have to ask. We are proud to be members of NAFD and will continue to exceed the standards that are set.

It has been highlighted in the news recently about the impact in which direct, or unattended, cremations have been having on grieving relatives, especially when improperly handled by the larger online companies.

Being provided with an environment and an opportunity in which you can grieve is a key part of navigating this journey.

Each of our offices has its own Chapel of Rest, where you can come and spend time with your loved one if you so wish.

We’ve recently made an addition to our Chapels - as sometimes, we aren’t able to be with our loved one when they leave us, and there may be things that go unsaid.

Now those thoughts and words can be put to paper, sealed in an envelope, and placed in the coffin.

It might just be a small way that those unspoken words can accompany them on their journey.

We were recently entrusted with celebrating the life of Dawn, with a colourful and uplifting ceremony at Cromer Crematorium

Her family chose for her a soft pink coffin which was engraved with a sunflower, and service sheets featuring sunflowers on the cover and throughout.

The service was beautifully created by Fi from Oh So Civil Ceremonies, and stunning flowers were from Flower Moments UK Ltd

Thank you to the Porter family for entrusting us with Dawn’s care 🩶

It’s dying matters awareness week

If we talked about death and dying more…

🩶 it wouldn’t feel like something that exists only when it happens to you

🩶 we’d be more prepared for the moment when everything changes

🩶 we’d know what to say when someone is grieving

🩶 fewer people would feel like they have to go through it alone

🩶 we wouldn’t avoid the conversation just because it feels uncomfortable

🩶 we’d understand that grief doesn’t just end after the funeral

🩶 we’d give people more space to not be ok

Unfortunately, most people don’t know or understand these issues, and the bereaved and grieving are left to figure it out alone. And that is what needs to change. It is time to have real conversations before and after loss.

If you’re feeling this way, please know that you’re not alone in this.

If you need any help or resources, please have a look at the Dying Matters page below

A hugely important message from our friends at Cromer Crematorium and in partnership with SAIF.

We are you, and you are us. Real hugs and real goodbyes. Funeral services individually created and tailored to your specific needs.

Whether that is a cremation without a service, or a small intimate gathering at our own premises, or the full traditional funeral. Those choices are yours to make, and it is important that you know of all the options available to you.

That level of care is something we’ve been doing for this community since 1850, and will continue to do for generations to come

Monday saw the sun come out, as we were joined by the stunning Xantos and Jack from our friends at Pegasus Horse Drawn Carriages to honour the life of Mrs B.

Our journey took us through the village to the Baptist Church for her funeral service, and then on to Cromer Crematorium.

Thank you to the family for letting us share these images
