The Friarage Hospital serves a population of 122,000 people covering an area of 1,000 square miles across Hambleton, Richmondshire and parts of Harrogate. Maternity services at the Friarage underwent changes in 2014 and we now have a fantastic maternity centre which we are trying to encourage as many people as possible to use. This page has been created to improve local peoples knowledge on the Fr

iarage Maternity Centre and the services that we offer. We encourage you to use this page to share feedback on your experience and leave your reviews in order to help future women make an informed choice about where they would like to have their baby. We would also like people to share information about local events/services for pregnant women, new mums and babies such as breastfeeding groups, pregnancy yoga, aqua natal classes etc. The Friarage Maternity Centre consists of the Midwifery Led Unit, Community Midwifery Hub and Maternity Day Unit. The Midwifery Led Unit offers a relaxed, home from home environment, suitable for low risk women and their families. We are a team of highly skilled and experienced midwives who are passionate about providing one to one, individualised care. Continuous support in labour is associated with less use of pharmacological analgesia, fewer operative births and fewer reports of dissatisfaction with birth. At our unit a one to one midwifery model is adopted in labour and includes assisting women in their choice of many pharmacological methods of pain relief such as oral analgesia, entonox and meptid injections. We also support with non-pharmacological methods of pain relief such as the birthing pool, aromatherapy, massage, sterile water injections, breathing and relaxation techniques, positions and movement etc. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence confirms that midwifery led care during labour is SAFEST for women with straightforward pregnancies. Evidence suggests women who planned birth in a midwifery led unit have significantly fewer interventions including substantially fewer caesarean sections and more 'normal births' than women who planned birth in an obstetric unit. Birth partners are welcome to stay in our en-suite rooms during and after the birth until you choose to go home, usually within 24 hours. Open and flexible visiting applies. The Friarage Maternity Day unit offers care from early pregnancy onwards dealing with a broad range of pregnancy related conditions and problems. It offers a multidisciplinary team and has close communication between the GP's, community midwives. The Friarage Community Hub offers a wide range of services for ante natal and postnatal care. These include antenatal classes and appointments, postnatal checks, baby weighing's, bloodspot tests, hearing screening, open access to breastfeeding support and much more.

✨MEET THE MIDWIFE MONDAY✨

Hi, my name is Emma and I’ve been a midwife for 27 years.
💞I love my role at FMC as an advocate for women and birthing people, supporting them in their decisions to have the best experience at this most special moment in their lives.👶🏼

I’m passionate about Global Maternal Health, biomechanics for birth and my role in running the birth reflections service. I also care deeply that people have choice in birthplace and can access care in their local and rural communities.

☕️I love to drink tea (Yorkshire, always!) and I spend my time outside of work raising my 3 teenagers (all Friarage babies), looking after our menagerie of animals, and walking up hills!🐶🥾

✨ Throwback to the day one of our very own midwives welcomed her beautiful baby girl here at the Friarage Maternity Centre! 💕👶🏼

Such a special moment for our team to share — and a lovely reminder of what makes FMC so special. ✨

“Can not thank my wonderful colleagues enough for bringing our beautiful baby girl into the world on 26/03/23 at 09:22. I got to experience first hand the exceptional care that the team provide every day and I feel incredibly lucky for it. Thank you to my two wonderful midwives - Sophia and Jill 💕 - you guys really are the best hands to hold. Lots of love to the best colleagues in the world.

Love, Rhiannon, Luke and baby Seren Jane Sophia Cowley 💓”

✨MEET THE MIDWIFE MONDAY✨

Hi, I’m Jill and I’ve worked in the health service for an incredible 40 years, and I still love what I do! 🤍

✨ My favourite part of being a midwife is caring for women and supporting them to have a lovely, positive birth experience.

🚲 Outside of work I enjoy cycling, swimming and touring around Europe, discovering new places and making memories along the way! 🌍

I feel very lucky to be part of the Birth Centre team. 💞.

✨Birth Story✨
Thank you for sharing and huge congratulations on gorgeous baby Mateo!🩵

“My birth experience at FMC is something I will always treasure. ❤️
As a first-time mum, I was naturally nervous, but from the moment my partner and I arrived, we were made to feel so welcome. The staff helped me stay calm, and Sophia and Becky gave us the loveliest care imaginable. Their kindness, reassurance, and encouragement made me feel safe and supported every step of the way.
My labour lasted just three hours, and I was lucky enough to experience a water birth. It helped me so much with the pain and allowed me to stay in a comfortable position, making such a difference to my labour.
Although I had to be transferred to James Cook Hospital, I never felt alone. Sophia stayed with me throughout the transfer and continued to support me until after Mateo was born. I will always be grateful for the care she gave us.

On 9 February 2026, at 2:47 p.m., our beautiful little Mateo arrived, weighing 8 lb 15.7 oz. The moment I held him in my arms for the first time was the most incredible feeling I’ve ever experienced.
One memory that will always make me smile is when the midwives told me that Mateo was coming out “like Superman” because one of his little arms was leading the way, just like Superman flying. It made us laugh in such an unforgettable moment.
Looking back, I couldn’t have asked for a more positive birth experience. I will always be thankful to everyone who helped bring our precious little boy safely into the world. 💙”

Our Tuesday Top Tip!✍️

💭 Have you heard of the BRAIN acronym?

🧠BRAIN is a simple tool to help you make informed decisions during pregnancy, labour and birth. You can use it in discussion with your midwife or doctor to help make the right choices for you!

B – Benefits: What are the benefits of your option, and what are the benefits of not having this option?

R – Risks: Are there any risks or possible downsides to consider with the choices you have? And how likely are they?

A – Alternatives: Are there any other options available?

I – Intuition: What is your gut feeling? What feels right for you based on your values and preferences?

N – Nothing: What might happen if you choose to wait or do nothing for now? Is there time to reassess later?

Every pregnancy and birth is unique. Asking questions and understanding your options can help you feel more confident and involved in your care. ✨

Save this post for later and share it with someone who might find it helpful. 💕🤰

✨ MEET THE MIDWIFE MONDAY ✨

Hi, I’m Sophia 👋

I’m one of the midwives at the Friarage Maternity Centre, and I’m passionate about supporting women and families through one of the most incredible moments of their lives.

Working in a Birth Centre means I get to provide personalised, midwifery care in a calm, home-from-home environment. I love helping women feel informed, empowered and confident in their choices, while celebrating every birth journey—because no two are ever the same.

My favourite part of the job? Seeing parents meet their baby for the very first time. It never gets old. 💛

A little fact about me:
✨ I have a Morkie called Colin🐶 and my fellow midwifery colleague Clare has recently taught me to crochet which is my new obsession😆✨

If you have any questions about Birth Centre care, we’d love to hear from you in the comments! 💕 Midwifery NHSMidwife PregnancyJourney

✨Birth Story✨ Congratulations on baby Evren Tyce born 3.22 3rd May, at home, weighing just shy of 7lb 2!

“My contractions ramped up in intensity but we’re mostly 8 minutes apart, at around 2.50 this went to 5 minutes then “4 in 10 minutes” I began crowning and called an ambulance at 3.13, with baby boy being born on the bathroom floor at 3.22 before any staff could get to us, very quick, very natural and despite not being at the friarage (planA) or at York (plan b) I was able to get a lot of things on my birth plan 🙈 physiological third stage, and placenta being delivered before cord was cut, no intervention etc. Ambulance arrived just after 3.30 and after placenta had been delivered.

I wanted to reach out as I felt I just disappeared and wanted to let you know how it all went 💝 thank you for everything

My visits to the unit was everything I wanted and needed following a difficult first labour and I always left feeling empowered in all my decisions.”
