Ross Gemmell - Osteopath

Ross Gemmell - Osteopath Osteopath & Director of Multi-disciplinary Health Care Clinics, Northallerton & Easingwold Osteopaths

Osteopaths aim to help people who are in pain by using a combination of articulation, mobilisation, massage and manipulation techniques and often prescribe exercises to further aid the issue. Osteopathy is a hands-on primary healthcare service that is suitable for almost anyone and can treat or contribute to the treatment of a wide range of conditions. Osteopathy is a system of medicine that aims

to relieve pain and improve the function of the body by concentrating on the connection between the structures of the body and their function. These structures include muscles, bones, joints, ligaments and connective tissue. Other services on offer are;
Kinesiology taping – beneficial for musculoskeletal and sports injures and postural issues. Dry needling (Acupuncture) – beneficial for musculoskeletal and sports injures as well as chronic pain.

One thing I’ve come to appreciate over the years is that people don’t just want treatment.

They want to understand what’s happening.

Pain often comes with uncertainty.
“Is this serious?”
“Should I stop exercising?”
“Will this ever get better?”

Helping someone answer those questions can be just as important as the treatment itself.

One of my favourite things to hear at the end of an appointment isn’t:
“My pain feels better.”

It’s:
“I finally understand what’s been going on.”

Because understanding builds confidence.

And confidence is often the first step towards recovery.

That’s probably one of the biggest lessons my patients have taught me.

One of the biggest changes in my thinking over the last 11 years has been this

People don’t come to see an Osteopath because they want Osteopathy.

They come because they’re looking for answers.

They shouldn’t need to know whether they need an Osteopath, Sports Therapist, Physiotherapist or Podiatrist before asking for help.

Our job is to understand their problem, guide them and, if needed, point them towards the right person, even if that isn’t us.

That’s the kind of healthcare I believe in.

Looking back at this graduation photo, I remember thinking that becoming a better Osteopath simply meant learning more techniques, gaining more experience, getting better a treating patients etc etc.

Eleven years later, I’d say the biggest shift in my thinking has been something completely different.

I no longer think the best healthcare comes from one practitioner trying to do everything.

I think it comes from good people working together, challenging each other’s thinking and putting the patient before their own ego.

That’s probably the biggest lesson I’ve learned since qualifying.

It has shaped how I practise, how I mentor, and ultimately how we’ve built Hale House.

I still love learning. In fact, I probably learn more now than I did when I first qualified.

But nowadays, one of the most valuable things I’ve learned is knowing that asking for another opinion isn’t a sign of weakness.

It’s often the quickest way to help someone.

People often ask what the biggest lesson from my own back injury was.

It wasn’t anatomy.

It wasn’t biomechanics.

It wasn’t even the diagnosis.

It was understanding how powerful it is to feel genuinely listened to.

When you’re in pain, the unknown can often be just as difficult as the symptoms themselves.

Having someone take the time to understand your story, explain what’s happening and answer your questions can make an enormous difference.

That experience shaped how I practise today.

It’s also something we talk about a lot within our team.

Clinical knowledge is essential.

But so is making people feel heard.

A lot of people assume I became an Osteopath because I was interested in sport.

The truth is:
I became an Osteopath because I got injured.

What started as a football injury at 15 completely changed the direction of my life.

The hardest part wasn’t even the pain itself.
It was feeling:
• dismissed
• confused
• frustrated
• and unsure if anyone was actually listening

That experience shaped a huge part of how I work with patients today.

One thing I never forget is how important it is for people to feel heard and properly understood.

Ironically, one of the worst experiences of my life ended up leading me into the career I love. That’s life for you!

63rd donation ✅❤️

Giving blood is something that’s very important to me and my family as it’s a way of repaying the debt for the amount of times that GiveBlood has come to my sister’s aid.

I’ve always felt strongly that if you can donate (physically + mentally), then you should.

I know we’re all busy adults with busy lives & it’s easy to put a job like this on the later-base and not get round to it…

…but take it from me, as someone who is eternally grateful to still have their sister around because of the organisation, have a think if you could find the time to make an appointment.

Hopefully one person watching this gets the inspiration to go and do a good deed and save somebody else’s life ❤️

ps- excuse the golden retriever hairs I’m covered in. I can neither confirm nor deny a motivational cuddle before leaving the house 😬

Many people come to us after trying different things that haven’t quite resolved the problem.

Osteopathy takes a slightly different approach, looking at how the whole body is working, rather than just focusing on one area of pain.

Treatment is hands-on, tailored to you, and aims to address the underlying cause rather than just the symptoms.

Whether it’s back pain, neck pain, postnatal recovery or ongoing discomfort, understanding the root cause is often the key to long-term improvement.

If you’re unsure whether osteopathy is right for you, feel free to get in touch or ask any questions below.
