Goodman Holistic Therapies

Goodman Holistic Therapies Within weeks of starting a Reflexology course, I felt that I had 'come home'. I trained in KORE Therapy with the KORE Academy, run by Dr John Brazier.

Reflexology, Bowen Technique, EFT, Reiki,
Hatha Yoga Instruction, KORE Therapy, Fire Cupping, TCM Clinical Acupuncture, Amno Fu Abdominal Massage, Sacral-Cranial rebalancing. I graduated from The Academy School of Reflexology in 2002 and set up as a holistic practitioner, working from home, adding year on year to my 'toolbox' of varying therapies and approaches to help improve my clients' health.

Formerly known as Oriental Body Balancing, KORE (Kinesthetic Optimum Recovery Enhancement) gently works to realign the musculoskeletal system, so bringing all the body's systems back into harmony and balance. I strongly believe that the body has the innate ability to heal itself; it just needs a little help from time to time. The therapies I offer are varied in their origins and approaches, but all are focused towards restoring harmony and balance within the body's systems, thereby enabling the body to start to heal itself. A holistic approach is paramount in my view - the body treated as a whole, not as a series of symptoms. By looking at a person's lifestyle: diet, exercise, leisure activities, stress levels, sleep pattern, work and home environment, family, emotional make-up etc, a great deal can be learned, and from that information, I can start to put together a treatment unique to the client. I spend my spare time predominantly with my beloved family and friends, whilst also enjoying travelling, meditating, reading and yoga retreats. Life is for living, so I look for the joy in every day.

Are you getting enough Vitamin D?
D3 is the form of vitamin D that the body is most easily able to use (bioavailability).
But it must be taken with vitamin K2 as that ensures that calcium stays in the bones, and prevents it migrating to the soft tissues of the heart, arteries, kidneys and lungs, and the joints.
D3/K2 can be bought in ready made preparations in the correct ratios.
Zinc and magnesium are also important factors in D3 absorption.
The RDA of vitamin D is also far too low for those of us living in the Northern Hemisphere. I take 16,000ius a day which is 4x what labels will tell you.
Next week I shall share a video with you explaining why you should take more than the recommended 400ius a day.
I’ve also found it’s best to take D3/K2, zinc and magnesium just before bed as they helps me to sleep.

Sunshine doesn't guarantee vitamin D3. Discover why summer deficiency is common in the UK, who's most at risk, and how to support healthy levels naturally.

Using Jin Shin Jyutsu to regulate your body temperature.

Jin Shin Jyutsu (Jyutsu is pronounced “Jitsu”) is a universal Art of harmonising the life energy in the body.
It may sound like a branch of martial arts but it actually helps us improve our health and wellbeing.
We do this by using our hands and 26 energy sites (SELs, or Special Energy Locks) on the body.
As Mary Burmeister, a foremost teacher of Jin Shin Jyutsu said: “It is simply the GETTING to KNOW (Help) MYSELF.”
When practiced regularly, Jin Shin Jyutsu relaxes, repairs, cleans and regenerates the whole being. It facilitates the body’s own healing ability at the root level.
I started learning this remarkable Art of Healing a few years ago and am still amazed at how quickly it works.
You can use it on yourself or on others.

The magic of Safety Energy Lock #8
In Jin Shin Jyutsu, we have what’s known as ‘Safety Energy Locks’ (SELs) throughout our bodies, and each one has a specific function. By learning where they are and how to work with them, we can control how we feel, wherever and whenever we are.
SEL 8, located on the outside of the knee is wonderful to help balance our body temperature, whether we feel hot or cold.

Feeling cold or chilled?
Place your RIGHT HAND on the outside of your RIGHT KNEE. This will help WARM you up.

Feeling too warm?
Place your LEFT HAND on the outside of your LEFT KNEE. This COOLS your body down.

When you’re unsure which to hold, hold both knees.
If you’re out and about and can’t remember which side warms and which side cools the body, don’t worry! Simply place both hands on the outside of the knees at both SEL 8 points. Your body will automatically adjust to the temperature you need. It’s one of the many amazing things about our bodies—they just know what to do!

Here in the U.K. and Europe we are experiencing some very hot weather at the moment. And whilst it’s so lovely to have a Summer - at last! - it can sometimes be hard to deal with the heat.
In Britain we don’t routinely install air conditioning in our homes and workplaces and if you live inland, as I do, with no sea breezes, the humidity can become unbearable at times.
So what can you do to try and keep cool?
Here something for you to try:

There is a breathing exercise (pranayama) called Sitali Breath, that we do in yoga to cool down the body and mind.
It involves rolling the tongue to form a tube (see photo) but don’t worry if you’re unable to do this, just purse your lips instead.
(It used to be thought that the ability to roll the tongue was a genetic trait, but studies have now dismissed this. However, approximately 20% of the population are unable, for whatever reason, to curl their tongue into a tube.)

Sit comfortably, close your eyes and drop your shoulders away from your ears.
Take a few long, slow breaths and allow your body to relax.
Curl your tongue (or purse your lips) and take a slow long breath in through the tube made by your tongue (or through your pursed lips).
Draw the tongue back into the mouth and relax the tongue (or close and relax the lips).
Retain the breath within your comfort zone. Don’t strain.
Breathe out through your nostrils.
Repeat.

Allow the breaths to be slow and easy. Gradually you’ll find the in-breath becomes longer, that you’ll be able to retain the breath for longer without straining, and that the exhalation naturally lengthens.
You’ll notice that the in-breath chills the mouth and throat and this helps cool down the rest of the body.
As your breathing slows down so does your heart rate.
As all this happens, you’ll feel cooler, calmer, more relaxed, and more centred.

Stay cool!

I recently discovered the pain-killing benefits of the herb Devil’s Claw. It can be taken in capsules, as a tea, or (as I did) as a tincture in water.
After being in absolute agony with hip and lower back pain, I took just TWO doses, and all the pain was gone!
A popular remedy in South Africa for arthritis, sciatica and lower back pain, research shows that it clears inflammation, may help gout and osteoarthritis, is shown to reduce lower back pain, and may promote weightloss.
Please check the contraindications, as those with diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disorders, gallstones, or stomach ulcers should be wary of taking it.

The Navel:

Navel oiling, also known as Nabhi Chikitsa, is believed to provide several benefits, including moisturising the skin, reducing menstrual pain, and supporting digestive health. This practice is rooted in Ayurveda, which views the navel as a vital energy centre connected to the body's overall well-being.

Do you know why it is beneficial to put different oils in and on the belly button?

Our Navel (Sacred Nabhi), is an amazing gift that our Creator has given us. According to science, the first part created after conception is the navel. After it is created, it joins the mother's placenta through the umbilical cord.

Our Navel is an amazing thing!
All our veins are connected to our navel, which makes it the focal point of our body. The belly button and navel area has a vital connection to the vagus nerve, which, when stimulated, can have a profound impact on calmness, sleep, and overall wellbeing.

The "Pechoti" lies behind the navel, which has more than 72,000 veins. The total number of blood vessels we have in our body is equal to double the circumference of the earth.

We knew that to lower the temperature to the babies, we put a cotton swab with alcohol in the navel, now we know that with oil, it's better.

Applying oil in the navel heals the dryness of the eyes, poor view, the pancreas, the heels, and chapped lips, keeps the face bright, the hair healthier, for knee pain, the chills, lethargy, pain in the joints and dry skin.
Apply Neem Oil in your belly button - to get rid of stubborn pimples and acne
Apply Almond Oil in your belly button- to help achieve a glowing face
Apply Mustard Oil in your belly button - to get rid of dry, chapped lips. Will also keep your intestines moving to remove harmful bacteria but keep the good. Actually works as a mild detox.
Apply olive oil or coconut oil - to improve your fertility

Keep alcohol-dipped cotton on your belly button - to cure a cold, flu and a running nose.

When a baby has stomach pain, we can put a few drops of oil directly in the navel and massage around the navel for a few minutes, to help the pain.

Keep brandy-soaked cotton ball on your belly button - to ease menstrual pain and cramps

Sesame Oil is used for all types of joint pains. It is also known to strengthen bones. Many Asian parents use it on their children every night at bedtime.

Use an equal amount of Mustard oil and Ginger oil for an upset stomach, bloating, nausea and other digestive problems.

Using warm Ghee improves blood flow to the nervous system and also enhances the immunity system. It cures constipation and builds a strong digestive system. It also gives relief from joint pain.

Thyme oil is anti-spasmodic, it helps relax your arteries and veins, lowering blood pressure and stress to your heart. It may also help strengthen and tone your heart muscles.

As a diuretic, Thyme oil may help your body to remove excess water, salt and toxins from your body, helping with weight, blood pressure, digestion, and more.

Thyme oil is an expectorant, which means it can help remove mucus from your airways and lungs. Thyme oil is approved in Germany for the treatment of bronchitis, whooping cough, and upper respiratory inflammation.

Remember Thyme oil is a powerful compound and should not be used directly on your skin, as this can cause sensitisation and irritation. It must first be diluted with a carrier oil (like olive oil, coconut oil, or almond oil)
Thymus Vulgaris Essential Oil 100% Pure Therapeutic Grade is what to look for.

* FOR KNEE PAIN *
At night before bed, put 3 drops of Castor oil in your navel and spread it 1 and a half inches around your navel.

FOR TREATMENT WITH CBD or H**P:
Place 5 drops into belly button and let it soak up. Do this instead of orally if you can’t stand the taste, or if your little ones can’t take it orally.

* FOR TREMORS AND LETHARGY, PAIN RELIEF IN YOUR JOINTS AND DRY SKIN

At night before bed, put 3 drops of mustard oil in your navel and spread it 1.5” around your navel.

WHY PUT OIL IN AND AROUND YOUR BELLY BUTTON?
Your Navel can detect which veins have dried up and by putting oil, those nerves open them...

You can keep a small drip jar with the oil required next to your bed and place a few drops in your navel before going to sleep. This will make it convenient to pour and avoid accidental spills.

As the school Summer holidays get underway here in the UK, and families start heading for the beach, lake, or pool, it’s important to know how to be safe around water, especially with children.

Here’s something you’ve perhaps never heard of: Secondary Drowning.
Did you know that you could ‘drown’ on dry land?!

It’s rare, but there was a case in the UK in 2015:
57 year old Alan Gough swallowed water when his canoe overturned on Ullswater in the Lake District.
He managed to swim back to shore without a problem, but a few hours later he collapsed and died at the wheel of his car. A post-mortem revealed that he died of Secondary Drowning.

So what is it?
Secondary Drowning can be caused by any partial drowning incident.
Make sure someone who has swallowed water is observed in the hours following the incident, and seeks medical help after the event. This can happen in any body of water - the sea, a swimming pool, lake, river, or even a paddling pool - if someone perhaps has a panic and has ingested some water.

Signs and symptoms.
Taking in even a small amount of water into your lungs is serious, and children have been known to have died up to 24 hours after getting water into their airways. CHILDREN are particularly at risk because of their smaller lungs; it takes a smaller amount of ingested water to create a serious, potentially fatal, problem.

There are 3 important signs that parents and carers need to be aware of and to look out for:
- difficulty breathing
- extreme tiredness
- changes in behaviour

All three symptoms result from the brain not getting enough oxygen because of the water in the lungs.

Statistics indicate that Secondary Drowning accounts for only 1-2% of total deaths by drowning, but it is more common in children. So please watch for the signs above if your child, or an adult, has taken on water whilst swimming or playing.

Mosquitoes

Summer time is perfect for enjoying warm evenings outdoors. Whether you're heading out to the woods to camp or curling up on a blanket in the back garden, there's something magical about long summer nights watching the stars.

What's not so magical about the summer: mosquitoes. Those blood-sucking pests can turn a magical summer into misery. If you've ever thought that the bugs were out to get you... you might be right. Check out a few things you need to know before you enjoy the summer weather in peace.

Mosquito bites are more than a mild summertime annoyance. They can lead to itchy welts, allergic reactions, and even the transmission of serious diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, and Zika virus. Given the potential health risks involved, understanding why mosquitoes seem to prefer some people over others is a topic that interests many. Knowing the factors that make you a mosquito magnet can help you take proactive measures to protect yourself and your loved ones from these pesky insects.

Have you ever wondered why you or someone you know seem to attract more mosquito bites compared to others? If you're curious about the science behind this phenomenon, continue reading to explore the diverse factors that researchers have discovered which may explain why mosquitoes exhibit preferences in their choice of human hosts.

Body Odour and Sweat
Mosquitoes are attracted to certain compounds found in human sweat and skin bacteria. People with higher concentrations of these compounds tend to get bitten more. This includes components like lactic acid, ammonia, and certain carboxylic acids.

Scent, Cologne and After-shave.
Mosquitoes are attracted to strong smells like the sweetness of a perfume or cologne. Wash it off before you head outdoors to keep the bugs at bay.

Carbon Dioxide
Mosquitoes are attracted to carbon dioxide, a gas produced in every exhaled breath. Individuals who exhale more CO2, like larger people and pregnant women, can be more attractive to mosquitoes.

Body Temperature and Heat
Mosquitoes can detect body heat and are more likely to be drawn to those with higher body temperatures. Exercise, alcohol consumption, and hormonal changes can increase your body temperature, making you a more likely target.

Blood Type
Research suggests that people with Type O blood are more attractive to mosquitoes than those with Type A, B, or AB blood. Some studies have indicated mosquitoes might be twice as likely to land on individuals with Type O blood.

Clothing Colour
Believe it or not, the colour of your clothes can make you more visible to mosquitoes. Dark colors like black, navy blue, and red stand out to mosquitoes, while lighter colors are less likely to attract their attention.

Genetics
Your genetic makeup can also play a role in how attractive you are to mosquitoes. Factors like your skin’s natural scent and your metabolic rate are influenced by your genes, which in turn can affect how often you are bitten.

By understanding these factors, you can take steps to lower your attractiveness to mosquitoes. Simple actions like choosing lighter clothing, using mosquito repellents, and staying cool can make a significant difference. Stay informed and stay protected!

4 ways to repel mosquitoes
If you want to keep mosquitoes at bay, try one of these ideas:

1. Plant repellents
Reduce the odds of becoming snack food by keeping bugs away. Plants like Citronella, Mint, Catnip, Marigolds, and Ageratum in the garden will help deter the bugs.

2. Use a fan
Use a small fan to circulate air in your favorite sitting area. Mosquitoes are small, and trying to fly against the tough breeze of a fan will likely prove to be too much effort. Ceiling fans aren't as effective as the small oscillating or box fans.

3. Try oil
Some essential oils that may be effective include clove, thyme, celery extract, peppermint, lemongrass, citronella and eucalyptus. Always dilute with a carrier oil. (Keep Eucalyptus away from children under 3 years.)

4.Line a small heatproof dish with foil and fill with (unused) coffee grounds. Place outdoors where you will be enjoying the evening, and light the coffee. It will smoulder away for ages, and the smell and smoke keeps bugs away.

5 ways to treat mosquito bites at home

If you were unable to avoid the mosquitoes, you can at least make the bites a little easier to live with. To treat mosquito bites at home try:

1. Oatmeal paste
Mix equal parts oatmeal and water to create a paste. Apply the paste to your mosquito bite and cover with a washcloth. Hold in place for a few minutes before rinsing.

2. Honey
Apply a drizzle of honey to your mosquito bite for a little itch relief.

3. Aloe vera
Aloe vera isn't just great for sunburns, the gel has anti-inflammatory properties which could help reduce the swelling of any mosquito bites.

4. Baking soda
Create a paste using baking soda and water. Apply the paste to your itch and let it dry before rinsing away.

5.Cupping therapy
Fire cupping, where heated glass cups are applied over oiled skin, is very effective at removing any toxins, and reducing itching.
I practise Fire Cupping in my clinic, and after being bitten by an unidentified insect, the resulting inflammation itched like mad, no matter what I tried! Within seconds of applying a cup to the affected part, the itching stopped!
