Olly has been out walking his dog Bella 🐾

Taking his time and growing in confidence with every step, it’s incredible to see how far he has come.

As a brain injury survivor, moments like these represent so much more than just a walk. Olly is enjoying his time with Bella and building his independence and confidence outdoors again.

We are all so proud of you, Olly, this is fantastic πŸ‘πŸ‘

In this session with Ian, we focused on building his balance and confidence using reactive throwing and catching with bean bags, along with bouncing them off the peanut ball.

These activities challenge both movement and thinking at the same time - helping Ian process multiple pieces of information more quickly. The goal is to improve how he responds to what’s happening around him, reducing feelings of nervousness and helping him feel more steady and in control.

Great work, Ian πŸ‘

Jon is thoroughly enjoying his time at BABICM, taking in an excellent programme of lectures while catching up with friends and colleagues.

A key takeaway from this morning's sessions: intensity, intensity, intensity.

The combination of robotics, hands-on physiotherapy, and clearly defined clinical goals is proving to be a powerful approach to helping clients maximise function and achieve meaningful outcomes.

Looking forward to more insights and discussions this afternoon.

Sensory mapping πŸ‘‹

Understanding what you feel is a key part of recovery when sensation has changed. It’s not always easy to identify or describe different sensations, but taking the time to build that awareness can help you reconnect with - and trust - your body again.

By improving sensory awareness, you can start to anticipate certain feelings, such as hypersensitivity, and improve your safety and risk awareness in everyday life - like recognising when something is too hot, sharp, or uncomfortable. It also helps with knowing where your body is in space, supporting tasks like reaching, gripping, and handling objects more confidently.

Sensory mapping gives valuable insight that allows Occupational Therapists to tailor treatment to your individual needs - whether that’s working to recover sensation or helping to normalise what you’re experiencing.

Small steps in awareness can make a big difference πŸ™Œ

Natalie has been working incredibly hard in clinic managing her Persistent Postural Perceptual Dizziness (PPPD).

As some of her main triggers are quick turning movements and repeated up-and-down motion, we’ve been focusing on graded habituation exercises to gradually improve her tolerance and confidence with these movements.

In recent sessions, we introduced BlazePods to add unpredictable visual stimuli, encouraging fast reactions, direction changes, balance control and visual processing under pressure.

We also incorporated ball throwing and catching drills using colour-changing BlazePods to combine visual tracking, coordination, head movement and cognitive processing. Progressing from larger balls to a tennis ball added an extra challenge to reaction speed and accuracy.

A fantastic session with excellent effort and progress throughout πŸ‘

Outdoor Trip Hazards πŸšΆβ€β™‚οΈπŸ‚

Walking outdoors can present a number of slip, trip, and fall hazards that are easy to overlook, particularly when pavements and pathways are uneven or cluttered.

Some common outdoor risks include:
β€’ Raised manhole covers
β€’ Overgrown bushes and vegetation
β€’ Uneven curbs and pavements
β€’ Loose debris such as leaves, twigs, and rubbish
β€’ Large or unexpected step-downs at curbs

To help reduce the risk of falls outdoors:
βœ… Lift your toes and place your heel down first to help clear uneven surfaces
βœ… Stay alert and scan ahead for hazards
βœ… Approach curbs carefully and step down in a controlled manner
βœ… Avoid walking on wet or slippery leaves
βœ… Wear sunglasses in bright conditions to reduce glare and improve visibility

A little extra awareness can go a long way in helping to prevent injuries and improve confidence when walking outdoors πŸ’™

πŸ’™ World MS Day πŸ’™

Today we recognise and support everyone living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

MS can affect people in many different ways - from fatigue and balance difficulties to changes in mobility, strength, confidence and everyday routines. Some challenges are visible, while many are not.

At PhysioFunction, we understand that living with MS can feel overwhelming at times, but you do not have to navigate it alone πŸ’š

Our team can support people living with MS through:
✨ Physiotherapy to improve strength, balance and mobility
✨ Fatigue management strategies
✨ Functional rehabilitation to support everyday activities
✨ Exercise programmes tailored to individual goals
✨ Falls prevention and walking support
✨ Advice, encouragement and ongoing support

Most importantly, we focus on what matters to you - helping you stay active, independent and confident in daily life.

Today is about raising awareness, showing compassion and reminding those living with MS that support is available.

πŸ’™ You are stronger than you think, and every small step forward matters.

A hospital stay can sometimes leave people feeling weaker, less confident, and disconnected from the activities that bring them joy. Often, with the right support and tailored rehabilitation, it’s possible to regain both confidence and independence πŸ’™

Jean has been working incredibly hard to rebuild her confidence with walking. Recently, she challenged herself to use her walking stick outdoors instead of relying on a wheeled zimmer frame or rollator πŸ‘

What makes this progress even more special is what it means for everyday life. Jean has now returned to watering her beloved garden independently and managing her own laundry again 🌼🧺 These are tasks she was previously asking carers to help with, but thanks to her determination and hard work, she no longer needs that support.

What amazing progress you’ve made, Jean - keep going! 🌟

Karin is making fantastic strides in her rehabilitation - quite literally! πŸ‘πŸ’ͺ

In this session, Karin worked hard on her coordination and walking pattern using poles while turning and walking through cones. To make the challenge even greater, we introduced floor dots to disrupt the rhythm and flow of walking, encouraging Karin to work even harder to regain a coordinated walking pattern 🌟

These types of exercises help improve balance, coordination, motor planning, and confidence with walking in more complex environments.

Amazing work, Karin - keep it up! πŸ™Œ
