The eclipse is coming – but please protect your eyes!

This Wednesday, 12 August, the UK will experience a spectacular partial solar eclipse, with around 90% of the Sun covered by the Moon at its peak. It’s an incredible sight – but it’s also one that needs to be viewed safely.

Whatever you do, don’t look directly at the Sun. Even during an eclipse, looking at the Sun without proper protection can cause serious and potentially permanent damage to your eyes.

If you’re planning to watch:

Use proper solar eclipse glasses – and check they are certified to ISO 12312-2 / ISO 12312-2:2015. This certification is the important bit. Ordinary sunglasses, however dark, are not safe.

Using a telescope or binoculars? These must have a purpose-designed solar filter fitted correctly to the front of the equipment. Never look at the Sun through an unfiltered telescope or binoculars – and eclipse glasses should never be used with magnifying equipment.

Check your equipment before use. Don't use eclipse glasses if the lenses are scratched, damaged, torn or otherwise compromised.

Prefer not to risk it? Watch a livestream or use a pinhole projector, which allows you to experience the eclipse without looking directly at the Sun.

A few minutes of checking your equipment could make all the difference. Enjoy the eclipse – but make protecting your eyesight your first priority.

Good news for your tyres!

The access road to our car park is finally getting resurfaced, which should hopefully mean no more pot holes!

Please bear with us over the next couple of days as this vital work is carried out. Access to the car park will be unavailable until the work is completed, so please make use of on-street parking nearby and use the front entrance opposite The Racecourse.
