Where rosemary flourishes, the woman rules.”
I love this old folk saying because hidden inside these old words is a much older understanding of rosemary.
Rosemary was never simply a kitchen herb.
She has long been a plant of the hearth, protection, remembrance, fidelity and feminine power. A plant that stands at the threshold between the wild world and the home.
And perhaps that is why our ancestors noticed that where rosemary thrived, the woman of the house often held the spiritual heart of the home.
~ She tended the fire.
~ She knew the plants.
~ She marked the seasons.
~ She blessed the thresholds.
~ She remembered the dead.
~ She carried the old ways forward.
As we slowly start crossing the threshold from summer to autumn, I feel rosemary’s invitation strongly. Calling me home.
And rosemary is one of the plants I love to sit with at this turning of the wheel. She is bright, fierce and evergreen. Her scent can awaken a tired mind and bring us back into the present moment. Her long history as a protective and remembrance herb makes her a beautiful ally for clearing what no longer belongs and strengthening the energetic boundaries of our homes.
And in Celtic folk tradition, I feel her especially as a threshold plant. One who helps us remember that the home can be sanctuary, altar, hearth. A place where the spirit is tended.
This September, I’m not simply “using” rosemary.
I’m listening to her. Perhaps you’d like to join me?
