What Happens at a First Physiotherapy Appointment at Florikids?

The answer is simple.
We talk. We play. We assess. And YES we treat.

Your child’s first physiotherapy session is more than just an assessment.
I do not believe in “assessment only” appointments where you leave and wait another week for support to begin. Your child’s first paediatric physiotherapy appointment is designed to be relaxed, engaging, and informative. Through movement, play, observation, and functional assessment, I begin understanding how your child moves, what challenges they may be experiencing, and how we can support them.

Most importantly, physiotherapy starts from day one.
During your child’s physiotherapy assessment, we may:
• Discuss your concerns, goals, medical history, and development
• Observe how your child moves, plays, balances, walks, or transitions between activities
• Assess strength, coordination, mobility, posture, or motor skills
• Use play-based physiotherapy techniques to keep sessions child friendly and enjoyable
• Begin treatment immediately where appropriate
• Show you exercises, strategies, and handling techniques you can confidently use at home

No child is rushed. No parent is left confused.

One of the biggest priorities at Florikids is helping parents feel empowered and confident.
You will see the techniques.
You will understand the reasoning.
You will leave knowing exactly what to do.
I actively encourage parents to take videos during sessions for personal use, so you can easily remember exercises and techniques at home.

After your child’s first physiotherapy appointment, you will also receive a detailed summary email.
This means you leave with clarity, structure, and a clear plan moving forward.

At Florikids, one appointment is never “just an assessment.”
It is the start of change.
It is support, education, practical strategies, and hands-on therapy from the very first session.

Today’s physio does not need to be perfect.
It can be 5 minutes on the floor. It can be one stretch during a cuddle. It can be standing practice while watching cartoons. It can be messy, silly, interrupted and still count.

Today I visited and had the pleasure of meeting Rachel and Mark.

What a fantastic space!
The premises felt welcoming, practical and full of opportunity for children and families. I loved seeing the range of sports equipment, the bikes, the sensory equipment and all the different activity options available.

As a children’s physiotherapist I always get excited when I see a place that supports movement, confidence, play and participation all in one space.

Because therapy does not always have to look like therapy 💁🏻‍♀️
Sometimes it looks like cycling, gardening, exploring, trying something new and realising “Actually, I can do this”

Thank you Rachel and Mark for showing me around. It was lovely to see such a thoughtful, active and inclusive environment.

School run done, little thoughts collected, and now back to helping children move with more confidence, comfort and joy.

Physiotherapy with children is never just “do this exercise 10 times.”
It is problem solving, play, imagination and a tiny bit of wizardry when needed.
At Florikids, I make therapy inventive, because children move best when they are curious, engaged and having fun.

At Florikids Physiotherapy I do not believe in giving families a huge list of exercises and calling it “a plan”.

Because a plan only works if it fits the child, the family and the real rhythm of daily life.

Some families can manage a structured home programme with lots of repetition. For example, a sporty child who already trains several times a week may be used to exercise, discipline and regular physical input. In that situation, extra physiotherapy work may fit naturally into their routine.

But for a child with cerebral palsy, neurodevelopmental needs or complex physical challenges, the whole day may already be full of effort. Sitting, transferring, dressing, eating, getting into the car, going to school, managing fatigue, managing tone, coping with sensory load. That is already work. Real work.

So recommending “just do these ten exercises every day” without listening to the family dynamic is not always good advice. Sometimes it is unrealistic. Sometimes it adds guilt. Sometimes it makes families feel like they are failing, when actually the plan was never properly designed for their life.

My job is not to overwhelm families.
My job is to listen, observe, adapt and create something that can actually happen.
That might mean a focused home programme.
It might mean one or two key activities.
It might mean changing positioning, play, handling, footwear, equipment or daily routines.
It might mean working gently with the child’s body and nervous system rather than pushing harder.

This is also where my holistic approach matters. I see the whole child, not just the diagnosis. I see the parent who is tired. I see the sibling waiting in the background. I see the school day, the appointments, the emotions and the reality of family life.

Children flourish through motion, but families flourish when the plan feels possible too.
