🌿Now accepting new clients for online counselling🌿

Sometimes life can feel overwhelming, and you may find yourself needing a space to slow down and make sense of what’s happening, whether that’s something you’re experiencing now or something from the past that you’re still carrying.

I offer calm, accepting and confidential online counselling for adults, where you can take the time to explore your thoughts, feelings and experiences at your own pace.

I also offer a free 15-minute initial call, so you can ask any questions, find out a little more about how I work, and see whether I might be the right counsellor for you. There’s no pressure to commit.

If you’d like to find out more or arrange a call, feel free to get in touch - [email protected] or find out more https://nextstepswithsimona.co.uk

🌿Green flags in my private practice 🌿

Counselling and psychotherapy are currently unregulated professions in the UK, which means anyone can technically call themselves a therapist.

So, when you’re looking for a therapist, there are a few things worth checking to make sure they’re practising safely, ethically and professionally.

At the very least, I’d look for:

🌿 Appropriate training/qualifications (typically Level 4 in counselling)
🌿 Regular professional supervision
🌿 An ethical framework and professional membership (e.g. BACP, BABCP, NCPS)
🌿 Professional insurance
🌿 ICO registration, where required

And if these things aren’t clear, you can ask your therapist about them! A good therapist should be happy to be transparent about their training and how they practise.

So, I thought I’d show you how my private practice fits into all of this and why each of these things matters. 🤍

If you’re thinking about starting counselling, or wondering whether it might be the right time for you, you’re very welcome to get in touch via email at [email protected] or DM.

A simple question that led to a really interesting conversation about empathy, understanding and what therapy is really about. 🌿

Turns out those photos of me standing somewhere nice and looking away from the camera finally came in handy. 😂

But jokes aside, I thought it was time to share some of the experiences and parts of my identity that may shape the way I work with people.

Sometimes it can help to work with someone who understands a part of your story. Because sometimes feeling understood matters just as much as finding the right therapeutic approach.

So… I could be your counsellor if…

“What actually happens in the first counselling session?”

The truth is, there are no tests and no expectation to tell me everything all at once. Our first session is about getting to know each other, talking through how we’ll work together, and beginning to explore what has brought you to counselling at a pace that feels comfortable for you.

**Finding the right counsellor matters, and it’s okay to take your time deciding who feels like the right fit.** If you’ve been curious about starting therapy but weren’t sure what to expect, I hope this helps make that first step feel a little less daunting. 🌿

The free 15-minute initial call is simply an opportunity for us to get to know each other a little. We’ll talk about what you’re looking for, how I work, and whether we feel like a good fit to work together. There is no pressure to commit, and you don’t need to share your whole story.

If, after reading this, you feel I might be someone you could see yourself working with, you’re welcome to email me at [email protected] or send me a DM to arrange an initial call.

Some books I’ve found really meaningful across my training, practice, and personal learning and a few I would recommend depending on where someone is in their counselling journey…

I’ve always been quite a book person when it comes to understanding therapy. During my undergrad, master’s and training, reading really helped things “land” for me in a way that lectures alone didn’t. It also solidified my decision to go into this work.

I don’t always agree with everything I read, and I don’t think we have to. Sometimes it’s more about what opens something up for reflection, rather than what we take as “truth”.

And on that note… no, I wouldn’t personally recommend “The Body Keeps the Score” or Gabor Maté, although I know they are widely discussed and many people find them interesting.

I’d love to know… are you a book person too? 📖

If there’s interest, I’d be happy to share more recommendations in the future (therapy/psychology related), or even some of my more “fun” reads around crime and forensics (another big interest of mine!) 🕵️‍♀️

And if you have any book recommendations for me, I’m always up for adding more to my ever-growing reading list.

I wanted to share a little more about my PhD research 📚🧠

It’s no secret that I’ve been completing my PhD alongside training as a therapist, but there’s a reason I chose to do both.
For me, research has never been separate from practice, it’s a way of deepening my understanding and bringing that insight into the therapy room.

My research focuses on family estrangement from adult children’s perspectives, and it’s a topic that feels important to me both professionally and personally.

So I thought I’d share a little about why I chose this area, what I’ve learned from it, and how it continues to shape the way I work with clients 🌿💬…

One of the most frequent fears people have before starting counselling or therapy is the fear of being evaluated or judged by their therapist.

I know that before my own counselling and before training as a counsellor, I thought that too. Looking back, I think it actually put me off seeking therapy sooner.

What I’ve realised, both through being a client myself and now through my counselling training and private practice, is that we often judge ourselves much more harshly than anyone else ever could. We are often our own worst critics.

Person-centred counselling, like many other therapeutic approaches, isn’t about judging people, problems or emotions. It’s about understanding your experience as you experience it, making sense of it together, and creating a space where you don’t have to worry about being “right” or “wrong”.

I hope this carousel gives you a little insight into what actually goes through my mind during therapy sessions.

If you’ve ever wondered what counselling is really like or felt nervous about starting therapy because you were worried about being judged, I hope this helps.🌿

My business cards and leaflets arrived! 🫶

After spending months working on everything behind the scenes, it’s really nice to finally hold something tangible that represents it all.

Seeing it in person has made it all feel much more real… and yet not quite real enough until I’m sitting with my first private practice client 👩🏻‍💻.

There’s still plenty to do, but for now I’m appreciating these little milestones because there was a time, not too long ago, when this all felt very distant🌿.
