🦶 Achilles Tendinosis – It's Not Always Inflammation! 🦶

A lot of people use the term Achilles tendonitis when talking about pain at the back of the ankle, but in many long-standing cases the condition is actually Achilles tendinosis.

So what's the difference?

🔹 Tendonitis = inflammation of the tendon, usually following a recent injury or overload.

🔹 Tendinosis = a longer-term condition where the tendon has undergone degenerative changes due to repeated stress and insufficient recovery. The tendon fibres become disorganised, weaker and less efficient at handling load.

Common symptoms include:
✅ Pain and stiffness, especially first thing in the morning
✅ Pain when walking, running or climbing stairs
✅ Tenderness when squeezing the tendon ✅ Thickening or a lump within the tendon

One of the biggest misconceptions is that complete rest is the answer. While reducing aggravating activities may help initially, tendons actually respond best to gradual, progressive loading. The right exercises encourage the tendon to remodel, become stronger and tolerate activity better.

💡 Recovery can take time, often several months, but with the correct management most people can make significant improvements.

If you've been struggling with persistent Achilles pain, don't ignore it. Early assessment and a structured rehabilitation programme can make a huge difference.

After a massage recently, I asked my client how she was feeling.

Her reply?

"I feel taller!"

It's something I hear quite often, and whilst massage doesn't actually make you grow, it can create that sensation for several reasons.

When we're stressed, in pain, or carrying tension, our muscles tighten and our posture can become rounded and restricted. As those tight muscles begin to relax during treatment, the body is able to move more freely, the shoulders naturally drop, and posture often improves. This can leave you feeling more upright, lighter and, yes... even taller!

But the benefits of massage go far beyond the physical changes.

Massage helps to calm the nervous system, shifting the body away from "fight or flight" mode and into "rest and digest" mode. This is where healing, recovery and relaxation take place.

That feeling of being taller, lighter, or like a weight has been lifted isn't just about muscles relaxing. It's often your nervous system finally feeling safe enough to let go.

In our busy lives, we spend so much time rushing from one thing to the next that we rarely give ourselves permission to stop. Massage provides that opportunity—not only for the body to relax, but for the mind to switch off too.

Whether you're looking for pain relief, recovery from exercise, reduced stress levels, or simply some time to yourself, massage can be a powerful tool for both body and mind.

Have you ever walked out of a massage feeling completely different to when you walked in? I'd love to hear how you felt!

☀️ SUMMER FOOT PAIN ☀️

As the weather gets warmer, many people swap supportive footwear for sandals, sliders and flip flops. Unfortunately, this can sometimes lead to increased foot pain — especially if you are suffering with plantar fasciitis.

👣 What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel and foot pain. It occurs when the plantar fascia — a thick band of tissue running along the sole of your foot from heel to toes — becomes irritated and inflamed.

Typical symptoms include: • Sharp pain in the heel or arch of the foot
• Pain first thing in the morning
• Pain after sitting for long periods
• Increased discomfort after lots of walking or standing

👡 Why can summer footwear make it worse?

Flip flops, flat sandals and unsupportive summer shoes often: • Provide very little arch support
• Increase strain through the foot and calf muscles
• Allow the foot to overwork to keep footwear on
• Reduce shock absorption when walking

This can place extra stress on the plantar fascia and trigger or worsen symptoms.

✅ How can Physiotherapy help?

Physiotherapy can help by: • Assessing the true cause of your foot pain
• Improving foot and ankle mobility
• Reducing tension in the calf and plantar fascia
• Strengthening foot and lower leg muscles
• Advising on supportive footwear and activity modification
• Providing tailored exercises to improve recovery and prevent recurrence

Ignoring foot pain early on can sometimes lead to longer-term problems, so early treatment is always beneficial.

If foot or heel pain is affecting your walking, exercise or daily activities, physiotherapy may help get you back moving comfortably again 👣

✨ One thing I am asked a lot during massage treatments is…
“What exactly is a trigger point?” ✨
A trigger point is a tight, sensitive knot within a muscle that can cause pain, tension, stiffness, or even discomfort in a completely different area of the body.
These knots often develop from stress, poor posture, overuse, injury, or muscle strain. When the muscle fibres stay tightly contracted, the area can develop a reduced blood supply and less oxygen delivery to the tissue. This lack of circulation can irritate the muscle and surrounding nerves, which is why trigger points can become painful and tender.
You might notice them as: • Tender spots in the muscle
• Aching or referred pain
• Reduced movement or stiffness
• Muscles that feel tight no matter how much you stretch
Massage therapy and trigger point work aim to improve circulation to the area, relax the muscle fibres, and reduce pain and tension. As blood flow improves, the muscle is often able to move and function more comfortably again.
Sometimes that “good pain” you feel during treatment is a trigger point being released! 😊
If you’ve been struggling with tight shoulders, headaches, neck tension, back pain, or sore muscles, trigger points could be part of the reason.
