Mental Health Awareness Week & olfactory rituals. Sometimes life is challenging. Firstly though, let’s manage some expectations- As a clinical aromatherapist, I’m always stressing that aromatherapy should never be used as a replacement for seeking the advice of a healthcare professional. It is a complementary therapy (can be used alongside other therapies), and as such, it can be very helpful in supporting our mood.

Daily Rituals that we create as an individual (to suit our own lifestyle) can help to regulate our nervous system, by providing regular, predictable feedback. This helps us to feel calm. A pulse point roll on or personal inhaler that can be taken out and about to work, a floral water spray, and an aromatherapy bath as part of a ‘wind down’ evening routine are some of the rituals that my clients have created for themselves. My personal favourite is using my aromatherapy hand cream (with my favourite signature blend) in the evenings when I’m reading before bed, helps to calm and relax me before sleep. We’re all individuals, and there are lots of different aromatherapy options available to choose from. Interested in learning more about what could work for you? Then let’s chat. 🌿🌸

In the meantime, please do have the courage to reach out and talk to someone if you are struggling with your mental health. No one should suffer in silence alone

Using the magic of these two beautiful fixed (carrier) oils today, for my son’s reactive skin. Organic Borage (starflower) and Rosehip oils help to calm, repair and nourish 🌹. No essential oils used in this at all, to keep it super gentle on the face. (Note - may not be suitable for everyone- always patch test, and seek professional advice).

Infused or macerated oils have been used for their therapeutic and cosmetic benefits for thousands of years. Some of the botanical benefits (and often the aroma too) transfer into the oil, which can then be used for a wide range of applications. Would you like to learn how to make your own?

I’m running a summer ‘celebration of Olive oil’ workshop in conjunction with fitness and nutrition coach on Tuesday 30th June 6-8pm.

I’ll be guiding participants through making their own infused botanical nourishing skin oil with organic Olive oil, and then Rachael will be guiding participants through making a herbal culinary organic Olive oil. Both oils will be taken home by participants- Nourishing our bodies inside and out! DM me if you are interested in further details 🌺🌿🌸🌻.

The wisteria in my garden is wonderfully aromatic this year! Interestingly, not all plants produce essential oils. For those that do, not all of them produce enough essential oil to be able to distill and capture sufficient amounts to be able to bottle it. We have to be content with the beauty of smelling and appreciating aromatic plants simply in real life in some cases. So, I will continue to inhale the beautiful scent of my wisteria from the garden whilst it blooms 🌿

April is anti-stress month. So, why are we drawn to go over to aromatic plants and smell them?

Humans have been doing this since time immemorial. At a very basic level, it’s because it makes us feel good! It really is as simple as that. When we inhale aromatic molecules, they travel to a particular part of our brain (one of the most ancient parts) which governs our emotions and memory. This is why a quick inhalation of a fragrant Rose, Honeysuckle, Lilac, Jasmine - or any other aromatic plant from the garden - can give us that instant feel-good ‘ahh’ factor.

Aromatherapy, being ‘smelling therapy’ can help to give us that instant ‘ahh’ factor too. It travels to the same part of our brain as when we smell a flower or plant. The key, as always, is to get a blend of essential oils that you adore, to give you that ‘ahh’ factor.

Aroma preference is very individual - there’s no right or wrong - it’s about discovering what you like / love. Want to find your perfect ‘ahh factor’ blend? I can help, just get in touch. Let’s feel better through the power of smell 🌿🌸

Today’s make: a gentle hand wash and nourishing hand lotion set. This set was formulated for a lady who is a carer and so is very busy, and washes her hands many times a day. So I chose the carrier (fixed) oils carefully for the lotion, to help soothe and nourish the skin on her hands (which tends to be thinner here). I then selected a blend of three essential oils that help to support calm, so that she can bring her hands to her nose after application and inhale a few deep breaths.

Sometimes all we need are a few deep breaths and a moment of calm, before carrying on with our day. I love how the use of an aromatic lotion can be a really quick and effective tool, to help support us during our day. This highlights that aromatherapy doesn’t have to be complicated or time consuming.

The beauty of a bespoke product means that I can tailor all of the ingredients both for skin, and for aromatic preference- to maximise the therapeutic benefits to our senses. Contact me if you would like to know more 🌿🌺.

So interesting 🧐 - it never fails to fascinate me: the affect that smelling an aroma/s can have on our bodies

There’s always more to learn with research, but we always need a starting point 🌹

This study explored the effects of continuous scent inhalation, specifically wearing rose scent on clothing for a month, on brain structure. Results showed increased gray matter volume in the whole brain and posterior cingulate cortex, but no changes in the amygdala or orbitofrontal cortex, marking the first evidence of scent inhalation affecting brain structure.
