Health in Menopause

Health in Menopause Our team of doctors provide specialist menopause advice to women in perimenopause, menopause, surgical menopause, early menopause and POI.

Each woman is an individual, her experience of the menopause is unique, but it needn’t be lonely. For many women symptoms start in the perimenopause and continue beyond the menopause. Hot flushes and night sweats are well known but less well known are the psychological effects of the menopause - low mood, anxiety, poor sleep, brain fog, loss of confidence etc. These can negatively impact quality o

f life, relationships and ability to work. Symptoms can last on average for 7-8 years but for some women they continue for decades. Throughout your appointment at Health in Menopause, our expert doctors will take time to listen and to explore how the menopause is affecting you. They will provide evidence-based advice and guidance regarding lifestyle measures to reduce your symptoms. As GPs, we are well qualified in providing holistic health care and have the experience to advise on the role of HRT in relieving the symptoms of the menopause and optimising your future health. With the correct advice, help and support this can be a positive phase of life. But if you’re struggling with symptoms and unsure what to do, book an appointment today. Don’t wait, it’s already been too long.

The free fix for menopause sleep 💤

If sleep has gone sideways in perimenopause or menopause, here’s one habit that costs nothing and can really help: getting sunlight in your eyes within the first hour of waking.

Dr Sarah Ball explains how morning light signals wakefulness to your brain, which supports healthy melatonin production later in the evening. A circadian rhythm working with you, not against you.

Easy ways to build it in:

🪟Open the curtains as soon as you wake
☕️Take your morning coffee outside
🚶🏻‍♀️Walk before work

Even 5 minutes of daylight makes a difference, and cloudy UK mornings count too! ☁️

In perimenopause and menopause, our priorities shift, and one of the most important things we can do for our future selves is maintain (and build) muscle mass 🏋️‍♀️

The good news? You don’t need a gym or fancy equipment to start. A tin of beans, a bottle of water, or a resistance band is more than enough to begin building strength at home. The key is to start where you are and gradually build up over time.

For brilliant, evidence-based exercises, search ‘Royal Osteoporosis Society’ on YouTube, a fantastic free resource.

Strength in midlife isn’t about chasing what we used to be. It’s about building what we’ll need next 💪

Hot flushes and a heatwave is not a combination anyone asked for ☀️

With temperatures climbing this week, Dr Alice Duffy shares her practical tips for keeping cool when perimenopause or menopause is already turning up the heat 🥵

Some people think menopause means slowing down. But as we know, our fabulous Dr Sarah Ball just ran the London Marathon!

She’s not got the same body she had at 39 (and she’s the first to say so!), but this time, she had experience, a mindset focused on the process rather than the finish line, less need to punish her body, and more need to listen to it.

We are still here. We are still capable. We don’t have to pretend to be who we were. Strength and goals are still within reach 🥰

For many women, especially those with a history of breast cancer, menopause support can feel out of reach.
We often hear stories of being told there are no options, or that conversations around treatment simply aren’t possible, leaving women to manage years of debilitating menopause symptoms alone.

At Health in Menopause, we take the time to listen, explore individual risk, and provide evidence-based, personalised care, even in more complex cases.

Thank you for trusting us with your care 🥰

“A scan showed that I was in the osteopenic range, and I was determined to do something about it.” 🦴 Our Pharmacist Independent Prescriber, Lindsey Lester, took action by building 50 impacts a day into her daily walks.

From squat jumps to side ski jumps, hopping and skipping in simple sets of 10, she turned consistent movements into a way to support her bone health during menopause.
It’s proof that you don’t need to overhaul your life, just start where you are and build from there 💪

1 in 2 women over 50 will break a bone. This is because estrogen plays a huge role in protecting your bone health 🦴
As levels decline during perimenopause and menopause, this protection reduces, which can lead to bone loss, reduced bone density, and an increased risk of osteoporosis and fractures.

Calcium and vitamin D, along with weight-bearing exercise and appropriate hormonal support where needed, can help with bone health, which is key to protecting your long-term wellbeing.
