These past weeks have asked a lot of my heart.
A dear friend leaving this world. My sweet cat, Monty. A body flaring and asking for more rest than the season wants to give.
And alongside all of it, gratitude. Not instead of the grief. Beside it. In the same breath.
I used to think the task was to move through grief until I arrived back at gratitude, as though one replaced the other. Life keeps teaching me otherwise. Our hearts are made to hold contradictions. To mourn what has been lost while loving what remains.
If something in this touches a grief of your own, whether fresh or long-carried, there is a place for it.
This Wednesday, 15th July, 7 to 9pm, I’m holding an online Grief Circle, with an EcoNIDRA folded in to close the evening. A chance to set down what you’re carrying in the company of others doing the same, then rest, held by the earth.
It will be the last Grief Circle before the autumn. And, as it happens, it falls on my mum’s birthday. It feels right to spend it this way. Tending grief in good company.
You don’t need the right words. You don’t need to know exactly what you’re grieving. You only need to come as you are.

YOUR GRIEF COUNTS TOO

When most people hear the word grief, they think of bereavement. And yes, absolutely. The death of someone we love can break us open in ways that change us forever.
But grief is not only about death.
Grief is our response to loss, to endings, to change, to the sudden or gradual disappearance of something that mattered. A relationship. A friendship. Health. Fertility. Home. Identity. Safety. The life you thought you’d have. The person you were before everything shifted. The sorrows you carry for the world.

So many of these losses go unnamed, which means so many people end up minimising their own pain.
If it changed you, if it shaped your inner landscape, if it left an ache, your grief counts too.

This is part of why I care so deeply about creating spaces where sorrow can be witnessed in community.

I’m holding an Online Grief Circle on Thursday 26 February, and this circle is for every kind of grief.
You’re welcome exactly as you are.

TWO YEARS WITHOUT YOU, MUM

Today is the two year anniversary of my Mum’s passing.

Two years in grief time feels like six months of “normal” time. Grief bends the clock. It plays tricks with distance. Some moments feel close enough to touch, others feel like they happened in another lifetime.

When I was in my early twenties, I lived with a quiet, constant fear of losing my Mum. It was my worst fear, the kind that sits in the background and hums, even on good days. My second worst fear was her dying before I became a Mum myself. I couldn’t bear the thought of raising a child who would never know her as their Nanny, because she excelled at it. She was the perfect mix of warmth and generosity, with a little flicker of wicked fun thrown in.

Thankfully, I did get over the line in time. My daughter and stepdaughter had her in their lives for several years. For that, I feel a gratitude so deep it has weight.

And then something I didn’t expect happened.

I spent decades worrying about my mother’s death, and when it came, it wasn’t anything like I imagined. In many ways, I don’t feel that my Mum has left me. I’m deeply attached to the knowing that I grew in her body, that my body is of her body, and this truth steadies me when the ground shakes.

I knew her so well. Her quirks, her quibbles, her ways. I rarely have to sit and wonder, “What would my Mum say?” because the honest truth is, I know. Her voice lives in me. Her humour. Her fickleness. Her tenderness. The village-ness of her.

And there’s another truth, too.

There were parts of my Mum that stayed endlessly surprising. Fascinatingly unknowable. When I remember that, I smile from ear to ear. What a gift she left me, the gift of mystery.

My most familiar person in the universe, the one I knew at a bone deep level, also kept a little of herself for herself.

As she should have. As I aspire to do too.

And now my Mum is with the ancestors, I can feel it in my bones. The doors will have been swung wide for her. A space made at the fire. She will be there, warming her hands, telling stories, making them laugh, holding court in that way she did, enthralling them with tales of a life lived well.

Love you Mum💕

WORDS THAT SHIMMER

If you love words that refuse to stay still, that shimmer off the page and become their own kind of alchemy, you must read this book.

I first heard the final poem, The Last Hours, read aloud by one of my favourite authors and thinkers, Manda Scott. I held my breath until the very last word, and when it came, I collapsed forward onto the desk, undone.

Andrea died earlier this year at just forty-nine. What a loss that is. Her work is a gift to the world, and to your heart.

Thank you, Andrea, for your words that keep breathing in the world and for the way you remind us that poetry is not only written, but lived.

I also wanted to let you know that my next Circle is coming up on Saturday 22 November and it'll be my final monthly Circle — ever or, at the least, for a good long while. I've been holding monthly Circles for nearly three years but I've decided to move into a more seasonal rhythm for next year and hold four.

It would mean so much to share this one with some familiar faces and some new ones too. I hope we can come together to honour endings, new beginnings, and all that continues to live between us.
