Let’s talk about erythema. What is it? Is it good or bad? Does it have any effect at all?
So what is it? Erythema is the reddening you may see after a massage. It is simply caused by an increase in blood flow to the superficial tissues!
How though? Friction from the massage increases the heat which causes the blood vessels to dilate and blood flow increase.
So is it a good thing? In short YES! Increasing blood flow provides many benefits especially when there is muscle damage or injuries. This in turn leads to an increase in nutrients to the muscles and soft tissues to aid repair and replenish those lost through injury or exercise! Not only does it increase nutrients but also takes away waste products from an injury site!
What if erythema isn’t present after me massage? This isn’t a sign that the massage hasn’t worked, everyone is different and therefore displays erythema differently or not at all!
So if you’ve ever seen redness after a massage DO NOT WORRY! This is normal and actually a sign that’s it’s doing it job!
