What to Expect at Your First Appointment ✨

If you’re visiting us for the first time, you may be wondering what to expect. Here’s a little guide to help you feel prepared and at ease.

🗣️ Consultation
Your first appointment will last around an hour and will begin with a consultation. We’ll ask about your current health, any medication you’re taking, and any symptoms or ongoing issues you’re experiencing. Some questions may feel personal, but everything you tell us is completely confidential. This information helps us decide which treatment approach is most suitable for you.

🔎 Examination
We’ll carry out a series of gentle manual tests to help identify what may be causing your problem. This can involve stretching, compressing and contracting different areas, as well as asking you to perform some simple movements so we can assess how your body is moving.

🙌 Treatment
Once we’ve assessed you, we’ll explain our findings and begin your treatment. This may include hands-on massage and manipulation, depending on what’s appropriate for you.

Everyone is different — some patients benefit from regular follow-up appointments, while others may only need to return when needed.

Have any questions before your first appointment? We’re always happy to help! Feel free to call us on 0115 9461699 💙

Tamworth Road has been made one way between the Green and Salisbury Street, so there is now no access down Tamworth Road heading away from Long Eaton Green. This also means that the bus stop at Long Eaton Marketplace has been closed. The nearest stops are now outside Tesco Extra on Waverley Street and opposite the Library on Tamworth Road. Myth buster time: Does cracking your joints cause arthritis? 🤔

The short answer? No.

Science has proven time and again that popping your knuckles, neck, or back won't cause arthritis. So, what is that loud 'pop' sound? It’s a process called cavitation, which happens when a joint is stretched and the pressure inside drops. This causes tiny bubbles of nitrogen gas in your joint fluid to form and burst. Fun fact: A doctor named Donald Unger cracked the knuckles on only his left hand for over 50 years to test this. He never got arthritis in either hand. 🖐️

⚠️ When should you worry? If the popping sound is accompanied by pain, swelling, or a catching sensation, that is your cue to stop.

The Osteo Angle: 🩺 While cracking isn't inherently bad, constantly feeling the urge to pop a joint usually means the surrounding muscles are tight, or nearby joints are stiff and locked up. Instead of chasing a temporary relief 'click', we can try to fix the root cause. We use gentle mobilisation to restore smooth, natural movement to your joints so they move freely on their own - sometimes osteopathic treatment can cause popping or clicking sounds, and this is normal.

Every summer, we see an increase in the number of patients that present to us with a 'cricked' neck. This frequently happens during periods of warm weather where people are using a fan overnight or driving with the windows open on their car. This can cause the deep neck muscles to tighten up without you necessarily being aware of it and cause a spasm within the neck which can lock the joints. 🔒

Help to keep your neck mobile by doing some gentle stretches, such as tilting the neck side to side or by looking over each shoulder. Remember to never tip your head backwards and roll the neck. If any dizziness occurs when doing any neck exercises stop immediately. 💁

We often get asked what osteopathy is and how treatment is carried out. The below description is taken from the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) website:

'Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of medical conditions. It works with the structure and function of the body and is based on the principle that the well-being of an individual depends on the skeleton, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues functioning smoothly together.

Osteopaths use touch, physical manipulation, stretching and massage to increase the mobility of joints, to relieve muscle tension, to enhance the blood and nerve supply to tissues, and to help your body’s own healing mechanisms. They may also provide advice on posture and exercise to aid recovery, promote health and prevent symptoms recurring.'
