⚠️ Trigger Warning ⚠️

We visited Newark last weekend to see the Knife Angel.

It seems appropriate to share this post during Knife Crime Awareness Week.

An amazing sculpture - and the talk shared by visitors when we were there was truly moving.

The Knife Angel was created by Alfie Bradley and the British Ironwork Centre, taking over 4 years, built from 100,000 blades removed from communities across the UK. It involved all 43 police constabularies.

It's purpose is to evoke emotion and raise better awareness of knife crime and to help promote educational change.

Every city it visits must agree to set up a permanent educational, anti-violence program.

Some of the blades are engraved with messages from families who have been devastated by knife crime and violence.

The Knife Angel is now a national monument against violence and aggression.

We, as Funeral Directors, often see the horrific results inflicted by knife crime and the sad legacy it leaves behind.

If just one extra blade is given up by someone who sees the Knife Angel, it will be worth it.

Guess who came to visit?
Beautiful Bella, our therapy dog.

She is on hand to provide comfort and distraction to grieving families, both at arrangements and at services, if required.

A welcome Monday morning pick me up.

TAKE ACTION!
from 11-17th May.

Here are some action items we can all try to do:

Step out for a breath of fresh air at lunchtime or go for a walk at the weekend.

Spend more time with friends, family, loved ones. It can make you feel more connected and less alone.

Start a new creative hobby, like writing or knitting (don't laugh) - it can help ease stress and anxiety, giving you a chance to step back and relax.

Be more physically active, eat better, get more sleep: all of this helps boost mental wellbeing.

Take 5 minutes out of every day to just relax and unwind.

It's Dying Matters week. So why have I posted a pic of my elderly cat?

Because, as a family we have talked about her death - with sorrow, of course but with no fear.

Death is the natural order of things, but we humans find it so hard to talk about.

As Funeral Directors, we see the anguish of a family who don't know what their loved ones wishes are, because they've never talked about it.

You aren't willing them to an early grave - you're being practical. What sort of service do they want?

What do YOU want? A big hoohah or perhaps no service at all? Music? Hymns? Pictures?

Have that conversation. Make a note if you like. Talk about death.

Because dying matters, just as much as living.

What do roses mean to you? These were gifted to me as a "thank you" for opening up our Arnold branch on a Saturday.

Yellow roses hold a huge range of meanings, from old cultural traditions to modern symbols of thanks and friendship.

Originating from the Middle East, these bright petals can be used to honour a loved one, to say thank you, celebrate a graduation, perhaps even be given as way of an apology.

Whatever the reason, their rich history makes them more than just flowers: they are timeless messengers of human emotions.

Feeling very humble today. A lovely couple came to see me in Carlton to ensure a letter of wishes was put with their funeral plan. I did nothing really, other than chat and answer questions. They have just popped back with a little gift. How unexpected and wonderful.

🐰 Join Us for the Easter Egg Walk! 🐰

Following last years success, Nottinghamshire Funeral Service and Gedling Crematorium are excited to announce our Easter Egg Walk on April 4th 2025! Starting at 11am from NFS Arnold, we'll follow the route shown on the poster, spreading joy and collecting Easter eggs and cash donations along the way.

Our goal is to gather as many Easter eggs and donations as possible to bring smiles to local care homes and hospices. The Easter Bunny will be joining us on the walk and will make a special appearance, so don't miss out on the fun!

After the walk, the Easter Bunny will return to NFS to greet everyone and accept further donations. Let's come together, smile, wave, and spread the word to raise lots of Easter joy for our community! 🌸🐣

If you are afraid you may miss us on the day, we are also accepting Easter Egg Donations at both Gedling Crematorium and NFS Arnold which can be handed in at either office.
