In case anyone isn't aware, there are now Covid-19 Mutual Aid groups set up across the country, with support groups at local level to help vulnerable or isolated people during the pandemic.

For example, there are lots of people across the whole area where I live who have set up street level groups and volunteered to help out with practical things like shopping, dog-walking, collecting prescriptions and keeping in contact with people who are alone, especially the elderly. I'm an admin for my local street group and it has been really encouraging to see how so many people are willing to step up and help others out at this difficult time.

So if you need support yourself, or have someone you're concerned about who could use support but is a long way away, such as an elderly or vulnerable relative, take a look on the website to find a group nearby. New groups are still being set up and there is guidance on the website to help people set up groups as well.

Find Your Local Group There are now thousands of local groups across the country. Below is an up to date list to help you find your nearest one. You can register your Mutual Aid Group here If you’re the admin of a local group, please get one of your group members to join this group so we can share...

"For many of us our upbringing did not teach us how to be vulnerable..." The idea of finding strength through our vulnerability may seem like a contradiction, yet acknowledging our vulnerability can be transformative. I love this article, lots to think about!

Vulnerability is not weakness. It’s only when we allow ourselves to be vulnerable that we can find our deepest courage and strength.

Exposure to domestic abuse or violence in childhood is child abuse.

Children can witness domestic abuse directly or indirectly, and it can have a serious effect on a their behaviour and overall wellbeing. It undermines a child’s basic need for safety and security and can have a negative impact on a child’s development, education outcomes and mental health. More information on the impact of domestic abuse, how to recognise it and how to respond if you have concerns can be found on the NSPCC website.

Describes what domestic violence is, its impact on children, how to recognise it and how people working with families can prevent it.

"What would it be like to feel safe, and what it would be like to have a place that was so nourishing and additive that even just thinking about it could slow your heart rate and soothe your agitation?"

Trauma sensitises our brain to any signs of danger or threat, effectively setting up "filters" that only let those things through, sometimes blocking everything good and safe out. In this article Carolyn Spring talks about her own experience of discovering the power of visualisation of a safe place during therapy.

"Trauma hijacks your eyes and your ears and your nose and your feet and all you can focus on is danger and threat and malice and pain. And you can't feel the turf below you, you can't hear the goldfinch tribble, you can't smell the trees and the moss and the bracken and the sea air. You forget how to be alive. You just focus, always, on danger, and it's all you can do to get through the next day."
