Following on from my post yesterday on language...

"Softening" the language doesn’t remove the reality. Calling someone “differently abled” doesn’t make inaccessible buildings accessible.
It doesn’t remove discrimination.
It doesn’t close the health inequality gap.
And it doesn’t erase a lifetime of challenges that are unique to being disabled in a world that is not designed with disabled people in mind despite 1 in 4 people having a disability.

We can recognise the challenges disabled people face without seeing them as less capable, less valuable or less human.

And we should not need to make disability sound more comfortable for non-disabled people.

Disabled is not a dirty word.

People sometimes use phrases like “differently abled” or “uniquely abled” because they think they sound kinder.
But who are we making more comfortable by changing the language?

For many disabled people, these words are part of their identity, their community and their lived experience. We don’t need to make disability sound less uncomfortable.

We need to make society more comfortable talking about it.

Listen to the language people use for themselves.

Respect it.

Use it.

Disability. Disabled. These are not words we need to hide from.

People with Learning Disabilities and Austic adults experience significantly worse health outcomes than the general population.

So what CAN you do?

More than you might think. Much of it focussed on appropriate screening and signposting when problems or changes are noted. None of the changes are earth shattering or take days to do, it really is the little things.

The latest Leder report has been published. It analyses data from 2021-2024. LeDeR exists to analyse deaths of people who havea Learning Disabilty and Autistic Adults (as of 2023). The LeDeR (Learning from Lives and Deaths) report is an NHS-funded program in England that reviews the care and circumstances surrounding the deaths of people with learning disabilities and autistic people. Its core objectives are to improve care quality, reduce health inequalities, and prevent premature deaths.

I'll be doing a post on how clinicians and services can help but here are the headlines - people who have a Learning Disability are still dying significantly younger from preventable and treatable conditions at significantly higher rates than the general population.

There is still so much work to do in improving services and we, as healthcare practitioners have to take some ownership for these figures. Don't look away, read.

A reminder that people who have a learning disability, have every right to be seen by the experts in their field, that could be you.

A learning disability doesn't change what we offer in terms of support and advice, it just alters the how.
