So you have the policy, the risk assessments and the safe systems of work but it is your staff that need to comply with this on a daily basis so how can you achieve that?
Watch the video below for more information on staff training records.
We take it for granted that people know how to work safely in our business but this is not the case!
So once we have our risk assessments in place, it is time for Safe Systems Of Work. Just imagine what would happen if you asked someone to cross a busy road without telling them what to do!
Watch the video below for more information on safe Systems of Work!
People shy away from the “mysterious world” of risk assessment, with comments such as;
- It’s not my job,
- I don’t understand that, and,
- What if I get it wrong?
Watch our short video for the things to look out for when writing a risk assessment.

Fireworks are beautiful but if they're not used correctly they can cause serious harm, not only to yourself and your property but to neighbours as well.
Sparklers look like a fun, child friendly alternative to fireworks but they can reach temperatures that are 20 times the boiling point of water so you need to be very careful and ensure all children are supervised.
An easy way to remember the safety points for fireworks and other similar devices is: SPARKLER:
S-hield your eyes with appropriate, protective eye-wear when lighting fireworks.
P-lunge your sparklers into a bucket of cold water as soon as they go out.
A-ttend organised displays where possible.
R-ead the instructions on the fireworks carefully before use and ensure they comply with British safety standards.
K-eep fireworks in a closed metal box and only light one at a time.
L-eave fireworks that fail to go off - Never return to a lit firework.
E-nsure everyone remains a safe distance away - At Least 25 metres from a Category 3 firework.
R-emove all debris and flammable objects - including plants/trees - from the area where you are setting off your fireworks.
How well do you know your manual handling dos and don'ts? Can you tell what is wrong with this video?
We know that not everything can be carried like a box! In our office, we have an unusual situation: Alison and David's dog, Archie, struggles to get down stairs so we have to carry him down. Clearly he is not a box shaped, although at 7.5kg he is quite a weight and wriggly.
The problems with the video:
Alison is carrying a weight (no offence Archie) down the stairs, wearing high heels and not holding on; all things which could mean she could lose her balance and take a tumble.
As an employer you are responsible for ensuring that all your staff have appropriate Manual Handling training which needs to be updated regularly. You don't want someone to injure themselves because you have not included this as part of your staff training.
Get in touch to book a manual handling course today and make sure all your employees are appropriately trained.
Yesterday was World Drowning Prevention Day and with the holidays coming up we've put together a list of a few dangers to look out for and some advice on how to stay safe around water:
The basics for water safety are:
- Learn basic swimming and water safety skills
- Stop and think; spot the dangers.
There are many dangers with water including; it can be very cold, there may be hidden currents, rocks or vegetation, it could be deep or difficult to get out of (eg slippery banks) or there may be no lifeguards in the area.
- Stay together
Go swimming with a friend or family member and try to make sure you choose swimming sites that have lifeguards.
- In an emergency: Float
If you fall in unexpectedly, float until you catch your breath.
- Call 999 or 112
Knowing what to do in an emergency may help you save a life.
Other tips for staying safe:
- Learn CPR; you could save a life in the time it takes paramedics to arrive
- Supervise children closely; designate a responsible adult to watch children when in or near water
- Wear a life jacket; this reduces the risk of drowning while boating. It's also useful for weaker swimmers and young children to wear them around any water.
- Knows the risks of natural water; Lakes, rivers and oceans have hidden hazards eg dangerous currents, waves, rocks. Check the forecast before activities in or near water
- Avoid alcohol; alcohol impairs judgement so avoid drinking before or during swimming, boating or other water activities especially when supervising children
- Consider the effects of medications; avoid swimming if you take medications that impair your balance, coordination or judgement
Stay safe out there!
