Steroid injections: This topic comes up almost every week with my clients. The very best results happen when the vets, physio and human client work together on a plan to support the horse.
Clinically, I would summarise as follows:
Occasional corticosteroid joint injections can be highly beneficial and may help protect joints by reducing inflammation. However, repeated long-term use carries a risk of cartilage, sub chondral bone and joint tissue deterioration. They may mask progression of disease and should ideally be combined with rehabilitation and correction of underlying biomechanical problems (farriery, saddlery, rider and horse asymmetry) rather than relied upon as a sole treatment.
Sharon makes some very good points in her post on this subject.
