No Wrong Path - Kirsty's story

I was a quiet teenager growing up with a huge lack in confidence. I didn’t fully apply myself at school because I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. While all my friends were filling out their University application forms, I still had no idea what I was going to do. I felt a sense of pressure to make a decision.

My mum and dad encouraged me to go to a healthcare careers day in Inverness, and I’m so grateful they did. I was completely won over by the University of Stirling Nursing stand. They had a campus in Inverness (now UHI), I would have most of my placements close to home in Wick, and the entry requirements felt achievable. It seemed like the perfect fit. Until that day, I had never even considered nursing, but I left knowing that it was exactly what I wanted to do, much to my parent’s surprise! Looking back at my 6th year report card, my guidance teacher certainly didn’t think nursing would be the best career choice which at the time felt quite disheartening and left me questioning if this was the right decision.

I failed Higher English at school, yet during my nursing degree I discovered that I loved writing essays. I had fantastic lecturers, I was genuinely interested in what I was learning and I thoroughly enjoyed every part of my training. I was fortunate enough to be offered a Staff Nurse post shortly after qualifying. At that time, I genuinely believed I would spend my career working on that same ward until I retired. However, as I gained experience, my ambition started to grow. I met so many inspiring nurses who encouraged me to believe in myself and to keep progressing. Their influence gave me the confidence to apply for a trainee Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) post in a GP practice.

I was in my element. I loved every aspect of the role and went on to achieve an MSc in Advanced Nurse Practitioner with Distinction. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that would be possible. I went from failing Higher English at school with teachers not believing in me to graduating with distinction at Master's level and working in a role that I absolutely love. If someone had told me 20 years ago that this is where I would be today, I would never have believed them.

If I could give any advice, it would be that your future isn't defined by your school grades, your confidence as a teenager, or what other people think you're capable of. Instead, sometimes all it takes is one opportunity, one decision, and the courage to take that first step. By doing this, you never know where that path might lead you!

We’re recruiting - Carer Support Worker -,North Argyll Carers Centre

Is this You?
Are you empathetic and a good listener? Are you resilient, reliable and self-motivated? Can you think on your feet and find practical solutions to everyday challenges? Can you use your warmth, enthusiasm, professionalism and sense of humour to help people feel at ease?

Who Are We?
North Argyll Carers Centre is an independent charity dedicated to providing high-quality person-centred emotional and practical support to unpaid carers across the Oban, Lorn and Isles area.

We support people who provide unpaid care for a family member or friend who, due to illness, disability, frailty, addiction or mental ill health, could not manage without their help.
Why Work With Us?

Our team is committed to creating a warm, welcoming environment where carers feel listened to, valued and supported.
We value teamwork, flexibility, professional development, innovation and kindness. From providing one-to-one support to delivering groups, activities and events, every day offers the opportunity to make a genuine difference.
"You have no idea what it means to receive your phone call today. To talk about these things is so important and you can't talk to family like this. So thank you so, so much.

“Every meeting, outing, zoom calls, phone chats and warmth will always be remembered especially through some very difficult times. Thank you to all the staff and lovely friends I’ve made.”

“The support we have received from your centre has been absolutely amazing. When all doors were closing, you were there for us"
What Does The Role Involve?

As a Carer Support Worker, you'll provide a lifeline for unpaid carers, offering emotional support, practical guidance and information to help them navigate the challenges of their caring role.

You will provide a listening ear, help carers access local services and support, advise them on their rights and entitlements, assist them to complete Adult Carer Support Plans or Young Carer Statements, and help them access short breaks and other support to maintain their own health and wellbeing.

Please note that Carer Support Workers support unpaid carers. They do not provide personal care or support directly to the person with care needs.

Some travel throughout the Oban, Lorn and Isles area and home visits will be required.
Current Opportunities

Adult Carer Support Worker (12-Month Maternity Cover) – 30 Hours per Week
Based in Oban, you will be part of the Adult Carer Support Team, helping to deliver our drop-in support service at the Carers Centre and providing one-to-one support to adult carers across the local area. You will build trusted relationships with carers, helping them identify their needs and access the support available to them.

Alongside one-to-one support, you will support a range of groups, activities and events for carers. This includes supporting our Parkinson's Group and helping to deliver activities and occasional outings that bring carers together and provide opportunities to relax and enjoy the company of others away from day-to-day pressures.

Adult and Parent Carer Support Worker – 37 Hours per Week

This role will focus primarily on supporting parent carers of children and young people with disabilities, additional support needs or long-term health conditions.

Alongside providing one-to-one support, you will work with colleagues to deliver our programme of activities, events and day trips for parent carers and their families, helping to create opportunities for parents and their children to have fun together, connect with others and enjoy new experiences.
You will also support the delivery of our monthly Family Meet-Up in Oban, held one Saturday each month. These welcoming sessions provide parent carers with an opportunity to spend time with others who understand their experiences while children enjoy games, soft play and activities, make friendships and have fun. Flexibility to work one Saturday each month is therefore essential.

Adult Carer Support Worker (Mull and Iona Outreach) – 37 Hours per Week
This role involves supporting adult carers across the Oban, Lorn and Isles area, helping them access information, services and practical support.

As part of the role, you will spend approximately two days each month on Mull, delivering our monthly group in Tobermory and providing face-to-face support to carers living on the islands. You will also support a range of activities and events for carers, both on the mainland and on Mull, helping them connect with others, share experiences and enjoy time away from the day-to-day pressures of their caring role.

This post would suit someone who is comfortable working independently, enjoys community outreach work, building relationships and bringing people together, and is willing to travel regularly.

Role Requirements
• Excellent interpersonal skills, including active listening and the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
• Strong organisational and time-management skills.
• The ability to maintain accurate records and prepare clear written reports.
• Good IT skills, including the use of email, the internet and Microsoft Office applications.
• An understanding of the issues affecting unpaid carers, or the ability to develop this knowledge quickly.
• The ability to work both independently and as part of a supportive team.
• Willingness to travel independently throughout the Oban, Lorn and Isles area, and occasionally further afield if required.
Regular use of a car and a full current driving licence are essential for all posts.
We welcome applications from people with transferable skills and experience gained in health and social care, education, community work, customer service, advocacy, administration and other people-focused roles.
Salary: £25,954.76 (pro rata for the maternity cover)
