๐Ÿ˜ƒ New classes start Wednesday @ The Library, Okehampton.

๐Ÿ˜ฎ "If Only Iโ€™d Known That Years Ago!"....

โ€ฆ.. we all want to be happy, we want to have a fulfilling life, we want good relationships...but we weren't taught about this at school. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

On social media there is all sorts of advice about what will bring us happiness....a new toothbrush, a protein bar, some new diet fad, but we know in our heart we have tried this sort of thing.

Buddha explains that happiness comes from a peaceful mind!...if only we had been taught that years ago!!

In these classes we will look at a wide range of teachings and learn insights into life and ourselves. We will explore themes and meditations on compassion, wisdom and a focused mind to build an insightful approach to life. These teachings and meditations can be used by anyone to find peace of mind, lasting happiness and heartfelt joy. We all likely wish we had known these things years ago!

These classes are suitable for everyone, and no previous experience is needed. You can start coming to classes at any time and can attend as many sessions as you wish. Each class is self-contained. Everyone is welcome.

๐Ÿ˜€ New meditation classes starting at the Library, in September - 'If Only Iโ€™d Known That Years Ago!" ๐Ÿ˜€

โ€œIf only Iโ€™d known that years ago!โ€โ€ฆ.. weโ€™ve all heard it or said it. It is a phrase which highlights the value of learning from experience and wishing weโ€™d understood important lessons sooner.

But actually we can be positive about this and recognise that no matter how old we are or whatever choices we have made in the past, we can always learn now and live in a new and more beneficial way.

It is our last class of term, this Wednesday 22nd July, (6.30pm, Okehampton Library). Classes will return in September ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ’–๐ŸŽ‰

Over this term we have looked at many different meditations outlined in "The New Meditation Handbook" that are techniques that Buddha explained as methods to control and tame our mind. Learning to let go of the aversion and cravings that underlay our stressful and anxious feelings we can grow our natural potential for love and compassion and develop powerful, altruistic views and intentions that bring us mental peace, increase our happiness and unlock our potential to help others...or just make us a bit happier and more resilient to what life throws at us. ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ’–

In this class we will look at special preparations we can make when establishing a meditation practice that brings together all the conditions we need to make our meditation successful - perfect to see us over the summer break!

"PREPARING FOR MEDITATION

We all have the potential to gain realizations of each of the twenty-one meditation practices in this book. These potentials are like seeds in the field of our mind, and our meditation practice is like cultivating these seeds. However, our meditation practice will be successful only if we make good preparations beforehand."

โšฝ Wow there is something very special happening this Wednesday, it doesn't happen very often and it could be an amazing result!!.....โšฝ
..yes Okehampton Meditation Class continues this week! ๐Ÿ’– ๐Ÿ˜„

Sometimes our desires for certain results brings as much unhappiness as happiness. We need to develop a happiness that sustains us no matter outcome we have hoped for.

๐Ÿ’– Wednesday's class is about a very special mind we can develop in meditation called Bodhichitta, some times called "The supreme good heart". Developing this precious mind leads us the the best goal!โšฝ

"Bodhichitta is supreme. This profoundly compassionate mind is the very essence of the Bodhisattvaโ€™s training. Developing and maintaining the good heart of bodhichitta enables us to transform all our virtues into the path to enlightenment, solve all our problems, fulfil all our wishes, and develop the power to help others in the most appropriate and beneficial ways. Bodhichitta is the best friend we can have and the highest quality we can develop. The moment we develop bodhichitta we will become a Bodhisattva, a Son or Daughter of Conqueror Buddha."

We can train ourselves to be happy!

Breathing meditation allows our mental business to settle, and, even if this is just a little, we experience this as a peaceful feeling and we are happy.
.and this can be just the start. Some ways of thinking naturally make our mind peaceful, like love or patience for instance.

Other mental habits destroy our peace of mind and make us miserable, such as selfishness, jealousy or hatred.

By learning to strengthen our positive minds of love they will naturally overcome our negative mental habits and our experience of inner peace - real happiness, will increase!

Two of the most powerful meditations that Buddha taught are called Taking and Giving - training in these, we are really training in helping others to be happy, but the side effect is that we are also training ourselves to be happy! Come along and try!

"Through the practice of taking and giving, we can further improve our love and compassion. In dependence upon this practice we can develop superior bodhichitta, which is the gateway through which we can enter the path to enlightenment. As mentioned above, enlightenment is the inner light of wisdom that is permanently free from all mistaken appearance, and whose function is to bestow peace of mind upon each and every living being every day. It is the source of all happiness.."

Okehampton Meditation Class continues this week! ๐Ÿ˜Š

๐Ÿ”†๐ŸŒก๏ธEDIT: WEATHER WARNING. Obviously it still looks like it is going to be super-warm for class tonight, so please ONLY come to class if you feel it is safe for you to do so (and please don't worry if you don't feel you can make it ๐Ÿ™‚).

I am not sure how warm the room will be but will make a judgment once I have set up - hoping if we have windows open both sides it may be Ok. You can drop me a message on Messenger if you wish - take care, James๐ŸŒก๏ธ๐Ÿ”†
..in the upstairs room of the Library, Wednesday evenings, 6.30pm to 7.45pm.

๐Ÿ’– What would be the best present you could give someone? What would make them happy? Perhaps a lottery ticket with 6 guaranteed numbers? A holiday in Mauritius, what would it be?

People (like us) want to be happy all the time, but we know holidays don't last that long and come with expense and sunburn? We also see examples where people have come into great wealth but it hasn't bought the happiness they hoped for - sometimes they become less happy and have more problems? What could we give, and how could we give this to everyone.

The mind of Wishing Love or Universal Love is a meditation that answers this question, looking to give the best gift, to all living beings - training in this mind also protects our mind from unhappiness and brings great meaning!๐Ÿ’–

"There are many levels of pure happiness. Of these the supreme is the happiness of enlightenment. For this reason, in this practice of developing wishing love for all living beings, we generate the object of meditation by making a strong determination to lead all living beings to the pure happiness of enlightenment."
