When the "Poor Little Victim" Suddenly Became the Sweetest Gentleman in the Room…
When I worked as a carer, I looked after an elderly gentleman with dementia called Edward.
Edward loved attention.
And if there was one thing he loved even more, it was a little sympathy.
Every now and then, he'd tell us that someone had been unkind to him, said something hurtful or treated him unfairly.
Naturally, we'd rush over.
"What happened?"
"Who said that?"
"That's not alright."
And Edward?
He absolutely loved it.
A big smile would slowly spread across his face. Not just any smile - a slightly cheeky, triumphant one.
Then he'd glance around the room, almost making sure everyone had noticed that, for that moment, all the attention was on him.
I'll admit it - we genuinely felt sorry for him.
For quite a while, we believed he was usually the innocent party.
Until one day...
I was standing in the next room, and Edward had no idea I could hear him.
Suddenly, I heard a completely different tone of voice.
This wasn't the quiet, vulnerable gentleman we'd all rushed to comfort so many times.
Curious, I walked into the room.
And within seconds, Edward delivered a performance worthy of an Oscar. 🎭
His voice became soft.
The innocent smile returned.
And suddenly, he was the sweetest gentleman in the whole care home.
I couldn't help smiling.
"Edward… I was standing behind the door the whole time."
The silence that followed...
I'll never forget the look on his face.
😄
That moment taught me something important.
Working in dementia care reminds you never to jump to conclusions. Every situation has more than one side, and it's important to listen, observe and understand what's really happened before making assumptions.
Things aren't always quite as they first appear.
And I have to say...
Some older people never lose their flair for a little drama.
Edward certainly deserved an award for Best Performance. ❤️
