FROM A HOSPITAL BED TO A COFFEE DATE WITH FAMILY. THIS IS WHAT PERSON-CENTRED CARE IS ALL ABOUT.

When Jodii Harthan and I first met our lovely Maggie in hospital, she was very poorly. Although she was ready for discharge, she still needed care, reassurance and the right support to help her regain her confidence.

Her family placed their trust in Visiting Angels Manchester East, and what a privilege it has been to become part of Maggie’s journey.

TODAY, JUST LOOK AT THAT SMILE!

Seeing Maggie looking so happy, standing with her walking frame and preparing to enjoy a coffee outing with Mike and her grandson is absolutely heartwarming.

In a relatively short time, we’ve watched Maggie make wonderful progress with her mobility, confidence and wellbeing.

Our dedicated team of Angels, including the wonderful Amy, have supported Maggie with personal care, companionship and encouragement, always respecting her independence and individual choices.

BECAUSE GOOD CARE IS ABOUT MEETING NEEDS. OUTSTANDING CARE IS ABOUT HELPING PEOPLE LIVE THEIR LIVES.

It’s about helping someone regain their confidence, enjoy precious moments with family and rediscover the simple pleasures that make life meaningful.

For Badar, Jodie, me and our entire team, seeing Maggie smiling and enjoying life is everything we work towards.

WHEN LANGUAGE IS NO LONGER A BARRIER, CARE BECOMES A CONNECTION.

Today, we witnessed a beautiful example of what truly person-centred care looks like.

Following her physiotherapy exercises, supported by her Angel, our lovely client chose to pick up her favourite Urdu book and begin reading aloud.

NOT BECAUSE IT WAS PART OF HER CARE PLAN, BUT BECAUSE SHE FELT COMFORTABLE, CONFIDENT AND UNDERSTOOD.

Her Angel listened, engaged and understood every word, because they shared the same language.

This is why thoughtfully matching clients with caregivers who understand their language, culture and individual needs can make such a meaningful difference.

Physiotherapy exercises explained in a person’s preferred language can support understanding, participation and confidence. Meaningful conversation and shared interests can promote emotional wellbeing, companionship and a genuine sense of belonging.

PERSON-CENTRED CARE IS NOT SIMPLY ABOUT COMPLETING TASKS. IT IS ABOUT SEEING THE PERSON BEHIND THE CARE PLAN.

It is about respecting identity, encouraging independence, supporting individual choices and creating opportunities for people to enjoy the things that matter most to them.

WHEN COMMUNICATION FLOWS, TRUST GROWS. WHEN TRUST GROWS, PEOPLE FLOURISH.

At Visiting Angels Manchester East, we believe outstanding care should never lose sight of the individual.

SOME PEOPLE CHOOSE TO BECOME CARERS. BUT SOMETIMES, LIFE CHOOSES SOMEONE TO CARE.

And our beautiful Angel, Amy Holroyd is living proof of that.

Today, I find myself feeling incredibly emotional, overwhelmed with gratitude and reminded of why we started this journey in the first place.

BECAUSE TRUE CARE ISN’T JUST SOMETHING YOU DO. IT’S SOMETHING YOU FEEL.

Recently, our lovely client Maggie wasn’t quite herself. Her usual happiness had faded, and she was feeling a little low.

But Amy noticed.

And rather than simply carrying on with her day, Amy decided to bring a little sunshine back into Maggie’s world.

She went out, bought a pumpkin with her own money and spent her time helping Maggie carve it.

There was laughter. There was joy. And most importantly, there was that beautiful smile on Maggie’s face again.

Before leaving, Amy placed their pumpkin beside Maggie’s bed.

A SIMPLE PUMPKIN TO SOME. A PRICELESS MEMORY TO MAGGIE.

And that is what makes Amy so extraordinary.

In the four and a half years that Badar and I have been running our care business, I have rarely witnessed someone give so selflessly of their own precious time, energy and even their own money, without expecting anything in return.

NOT FOR RECOGNITION.

NOT FOR REWARD.

NOT BECAUSE IT’S PART OF HER JOB.

BUT SIMPLY BECAUSE HER HEART TELLS HER TO.

You can train someone to become a carer. You can teach skills, procedures and responsibilities.

BUT YOU CANNOT TEACH SOMEONE TO HAVE A HEART LIKE AMY’S.

That kind of compassion comes from within.

Amy, I want you to know something.

WE SEE YOU.

WE APPRECIATE YOU.

AND WE ARE SO INCREDIBLY PROUD OF YOU.

Your kindness never goes unnoticed. Not by Badar and me, not by your fellow Angels, and certainly not by the people whose lives you touch.

There should be so many more people like you in this world.

Because sometimes, making a difference doesn’t require something extraordinary. Sometimes, it simply takes a pumpkin, a little kindness and someone with a beautiful heart.

AMY, YOU AREN’T JUST AN ANGEL BY NAME. YOU ARE AN ANGEL BY NATURE.

ANOTHER REASON TO CELEBRATE – WE’RE FINALISTS AGAIN!

This is our second finalist nomination at these awards, following the wonderful news that Badar and I have also been shortlisted for The Joy Maker Award.

WE’RE FINALISTS! THE JOY MAKER AWARD!

We are absolutely delighted to share that Roxie Taj and Badar Usmani of Visiting Angels Manchester East have been shortlisted as finalists for The Joy Maker Award at the inaugural Stars of Dementia Care Awards 2026!

This recognition is particularly close to our hearts because, for us, care has never been simply about meeting someone’s needs. It’s about making people smile, creating moments of happiness, preserving precious memories and ensuring that those living with dementia continue to experience love, laughter and a sense of belonging.

From singing and dancing to painting nails, sharing a cup of tea, enjoying a little pampering or simply holding someone’s hand, it’s often the smallest moments that leave the biggest impressions.

Our Deja VA Café was born from that very belief: bringing people together, celebrating the person behind the diagnosis and creating a place where memories can still be made, even when others begin to fade.

But none of this would be possible without our wonderful Angels, who bring warmth, compassion, creativity and joy into the lives of those they support every single day. This recognition belongs to them just as much as it does to us.

To whoever took the time to nominate us, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Knowing that our efforts have touched someone enough to put our names forward means more than any trophy ever could.

We look forward to celebrating alongside so many incredible people in dementia care on 2 December 2026 in Manchester.

From the day we met Mr Bashir’s family until his passing, Badar did everything in his power to ensure he had every piece of equipment, support and care he needed, always looking upon him with gentle eyes and compassion.

I will forever treasure the way Mr Bashir placed his hand on my head every time we met. A beautiful memory I will always cherish.
