A 2024 open access review in JAMA Network Open mapped systematic reviews of massage for adult pain conditions (2018 to 2023). Even with hundreds of trials out there, the authors found no high certainty conclusions, and only a small number of moderate certainty conclusions, most evidence was rated low or very low certainty.

Takeaway for therapists, this is not bad news, it is guidance. Talk about massage in careful, accurate terms, for some people it may help pain and comfort, but it is rarely proven as superior to other active options. Keep your claims inside the evidence, and your credibility goes up. ✅

❌ Time to move on from the ‘poor posture’ story
More and more therapists are now learning that so called poor posture does not equal pain, and they are helping clients understand that their body is not broken because one shoulder is higher or their pelvis is not perfectly level.

💡 Posture is an adaptable structural process.
It shifts to help us get through everyday life, to manage load, stress, fatigue and mood. Different height shoulders, a tilted pelvis or a small leg length difference can be completely normal and fully functional.

✅ A modern approach
Stop blaming posture and symmetry for every pain problem
See structure as one small piece in a much bigger picture
Focus on confidence, capacity and movement options, not trying to straighten people to match a chart

🤝 A kind but clear invitation
As a profession we can gently leave behind the old structural model that assumes crooked equals damaged. Modern practice means using updated pain science, better language and a more rounded view of the person in front of us.

This is about raising your confidence, deepening your understanding, and ensuring you know how to safely and effectively evaluate the benefits of massage for clients with this condition.
