If you feel like you’re repeating yourself all day long, this might be why…

Here’s how ADHD can show up in your child — and it’s really easy to mistake this for not listening.

ADHD: a child’s working memory may be more easily overloaded.

Working memory is like a mental Post-it note.

If you give your child three things to remember but there’s only room for one, the others can fall off before they’ve even started.

What’s the thing you find yourself repeating most in your house?

Are you asking for your child to be flown to school by private jet?Are you asking for your child to have special meals, ...

Are you asking for your child to be flown to school by private jet?

Are you asking for your child to have special meals, cooked by private chef in the school dinner hall?

Are you asking for the entire school to change how it operates just for your child?

No.

Yet the local authority acts like you are.

What you’re actually asking for is what they are entitled to. The provision that’s on their EHCP. If you’ve got a child with autism, ADHD or a language disorder, you can probably relate.

You can attend every meeting.
Sign all the forms.
Smile at the teachers.
Nod through each update.
And then sit in your car after.
Knowing that what’s on paper and what is true for your child are not the same.
You feel it every morning.
The pause before school.
The weight they carry home.
The gap between reports and what you know.
That gap is real.
And here we go again starting another school year cycle on repeat

As a tribunal expert witness I help parents daily who have been pushed into constant fight mode by their Local Authority.

Fighting, fighting, fighting for your child to have their educational needs met - something which they are absolutely entitled to somehow becomes a fight, they have to prove the need that’s already been proven by the professionals who assessed them. It’s crazy-making stuff!

Comment advocate if you’d like to know more about navigating EHCP process successfully whilst keeping your sanity.

Your calm can be the strongest tool in the therapy room

“But how can I be calm when my child’s nervous system is pulling mine apart every single day?”

No one handed you a regulated nervous system along with the diagnosis letter.

No one said… here is your child’s EHCP, and here is six months of support to help you not fall apart while you fight for them.

So let’s be realistic. Calm is not something you summon through willpower. It is not a mindset shift you achieve by breathing deeply once before the school run.

When you are living inside the daily reality of a child whose nervous system is in constant dysregulation, the meltdowns, the hypervigilance, the waiting, the fighting the system, your nervous system is responding exactly as it was designed to.

It is responding to a genuine threat. Daily!

This is precisely why I built the Connected Parent Pathway.

To give your nervous system somewhere to land, so that calm becomes something you can actually access, not just something you’re told to find.

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but your nervous system matters too.

Raising an autistic child can be a completely different level of parenting.

You may be surviving on broken sleep, managing food restrictions, anticipating sensory overload, dealing with school calls and fighting for support that should never be this difficult to access.

You’re constantly thinking ahead. Will they cope? What might trigger a meltdown? Will anyone understand them? Will they manage at school? What will their future look like?

I see parents who are raising autistic children daily and they are the most patient and loving parents I have ever seen. They have an endless amount of understanding. But I do wonder how they are coping inside and how their nervous system is handling it.

Even when everything appears calm, you may still be on high alert.

You can love your child fiercely and still admit that this is exhausting. Autism parents are carrying far more than most people can see.

Are you looking after ‘you’ while you’re holding everything together?

If you have an autistic child, there’s a good chance you may recognise some sensory sensitivities in yourself too.

Maybe you’ve always hated loud noises, hand dryers or sirens. Maybe certain food textures make you gag. Maybe you avoid particular fabrics, smells, crowded places or being touched unexpectedly.

You might never have thought much about it. You’ve just spent years adapting, avoiding things where you can and masking when you can’t.

I’ve had sensory sensitivities since I was a child. There are noises I genuinely find unbearable. But looking at me in this picture, you’d probably never know.

That’s the thing about masking.

Someone can look completely fine while their nervous system is having a very different experience.

And sometimes, understanding your child’s sensory world makes you recognise a little more of your own.

Has having an autistic or sensory-sensitive child made you recognise things about yourself?

Is your young child really school ready?

Sometimes the first signs of a communication difficulty don’t look like communication difficulties at all.

They can look like this:

1. They fall apart after school – they’ve held it together all day and melt down at home.
2. Mornings are a battle – tears, anxiety or overwhelm before school.
3. Transitions are hard – stopping one activity and moving to another causes distress.
4. Groups are difficult – they’re fine one-to-one, but get lost when everyone is talking.
5. They copy other children – watching what everyone else does rather than understanding the instruction.
6. “I don’t know” is the answer to everything – especially when you ask about their day.
7. Friendships are tricky – they want to join in but don’t quite know how.
8. They get frustrated trying to explain themselves – particularly when something has gone wrong.
9. Busy classrooms overwhelm them – too much noise, language and information at once.
10. They’re completely exhausted after school – communicating and keeping up all day can take enormous effort.

And here’s the important bit:

What looks like behaviour, anxiety, shyness or difficulty settling into school can sometimes be a child struggling to understand language, process what’s happening or communicate what they need.

Not sure about your child?

I created my FREE Early Years Communication Tracker to give parents more clarity about their child’s communication strengths and difficulties.

You can even take it to conversations with their teacher, SENCo or GP to help explain what you’re noticing and advocate for support.

It brings together 25 years of my clinical experience and evidence based research.

It’s completely free — download it through the link in my bio.

Is your child on this list?

This approach might help children who are:
- Autistic or on the autism spectrum

- Diagnosed with ADHD or who have attention and processing differences

- Showing signs of developmental verbal dyspraxia / motor speech disorder

- Late talkers not progressing as expected

- Experiencing sensory sensitivities affecting therapy participation

- Struggling with regulation, making language access harder

-struggling with focus and memory

- jaw clenching, jaw thrusting, teeth grinding, low facial muscle tone, excessive drooling (not teething related)

If you relate to these challenges and feel other methods haven’t worked, this could be worth exploring.

After hundreds of hours of research and completed laser sessions and all the many children I’ve seen transformed with my combined approach - I created The Lights On Pathway Method, my unique treatment programme to help kids make big positive shifts, quickly.

You’ve waited long enough. So has your child.

Comment LIGHT and I’ll send you everything you need to take the next step.
