‘In June 2025, my Dad was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer. We were told that the cancer was aggressive and likely meant limited time remaining together. He had retired only 3 months earlier at 60.

After an immensely well fought battle, and multiple rounds of both chemotherapy and immunotherapy, my Dad was admitted to Sobell House in December 2025.

The care, patience, and kindness he received at Sobell House was second to none. The nurses and doctors that attended to him gave everything they could to keep him out of considerable pain. He passed away peacefully on 23rd December 2025.

I’m running the Oxford Half Marathon to raise money for Sobell House in the hope that any donation will make a difference to any families going through what my dad, my mum, my brother, and I have endured. Even if it pays for a cup of tea for somebody at a moment they need it most.

My goal is to raise £1,200 pounds to contribute towards a morphine driver; only this consistent dosage of pain relief gave him comfort in those final weeks. I’d like to be able to do this for somebody else.

Thank you Sobell House for all you do.’

Thank you, Millie, for taking on the Oxford Half for Sobell and sharing your story with us and our supporters. We’re honoured to have been able to look after your dad and family at such a difficult time. We wish you the absolute best of luck and we can’t wait to see you on the day! 💜

In October, Lucy will be running the Oxford Half Marathon, and she’s very kindly shared with us her ‘why’ for taking on such an incredible challenge. 💜

‘Running the Oxford Half Marathon was something I never thought I would do again, having run twice previously and once for Sobell House in 2016 after losing my grandad in 2015.

Pappy, as we all called him, was the centre of our family, he was an amazing dart player, county champion and was one of those people who could turn his hand to anything.

His terminal cancer diagnosis in 2015 left us all devastated.

His admission to Sobell House was needed as my nan could no longer care for him in their home. I questioned whether I should allow my daughter, who was 3 at the time to visit him there. I didn’t need to worry though, Sobell House was warm and vibrant and a wonderful place that we spent pappy's last days as a family, laughing, and reminiscing.

Sobell House is an incredible place with amazing staff and my family will always be so grateful for those days together at the end of my grandad's life.

2026 is the year I turn 40, and I decided at the beginning of the year I wanted to reach that milestone birthday the healthiest, strongest and fittest version of myself, so I started working with my fantastic coach, Hannah, who suggested maybe I try running alongside my strength training, whilst hesitant at first I quickly fell in love with my weekly run and quickly signed up for the Oxford Half marathon. This will be my second time fundraising for Sobell House who are also celebrating a big birthday this year.

My last reason for running is down to my job. As a Team Leader in the Cancer Pathways Team at the Churchill, I know how important the services Sobell House provide are to patients and their loved ones, and how the money raised really does make a difference.

For all of these reasons, I am delighted to be running and raising funds for Sobell House and I am really looking forward to the day itself and seeing how much Team Sobell raise.’

Thank you so much, Lucy, we wish you the best of luck in your training and for the big day. Make sure to look out for our very loud cheer hubs. 🎉 🔊

We were delighted to welcome artist, Sophie Tea Art, recently to our Bicester Warehouse as part of her popular charity shop series. 🤩

Sophie chose a rocking horse from the shop and gave it one of her distinctive colourful makeovers, before raffling it to her followers.

Her visit brought lots of new faces into the shop, with more than £500 in additional takings that day. The video has since been viewed more than two million times, helping to raise awareness of Sobell House Hospice and the vital role our shops play in supporting local hospice care.

A big thank you to Sophie, her followers, and everyone who came along to support the shop. 💜

Follow our Sobell House Shops page to keep up with what's happening in store and see what you might find on your next visit.

‘Stephen, known to everyone around him as ‘Bubba’, was diagnosed with a grade four brain tumour in June 2024, and life changed in an instant.'

Stephen’s Sobell story has been kindly shared with us by his wife, Linda. 💜

‘Following brain surgery and the challenges of adjusting to life at home, he was introduced to the Living Well service at Sobell House.

At first, Bubba agreed to attend because he thought it would give me a break from caring for him. What neither of us expected was just how much it would come to mean to him.
Making new friends had never come easily to Bubba. He was happiest surrounded by his family. But at Sobell House, he found something special. The Living Well team welcomed him with kindness and warmth, and before long he had built genuine friendships with both staff and the other people attending the sessions.

Every Monday became something to look forward to. He would come home proudly showing me the things he had made with the teams help, and we shared wonderful moments together, including the Living Well Christmas lunch. The room was filled with such love and compassion. Those are memories I will treasure forever.

Sadly, in July 2025, Bubba suffered a major seizure that took away his mobility and led to him moving into a local nursing home. Despite everything he was facing, there was one thing he desperately wanted, to attend Living Well one last time…’

What an incredible way to celebrate Sobell House's 50th anniversary! 💛

Amateur artist Tom Knight and his wife Bunty set themselves a wonderful challenge to donate at least 50 of Tom's paintings to friends and family in exchange for donations to Sobell House. 🎨

Hoping to raise around £500, they teamed up with their family to host a delightful afternoon of tea, cake, and art in their beautiful garden. With the sun shining and plenty of visitors enjoying the exhibition, the day was a huge success!

Not only did more than 50 paintings find new homes, but together they raised an incredible £1,188.30! 🎉

A huge thank you to Tom, Bunty, their family, and everyone who came along, supported the event, and helped make this special challenge such a fantastic success. What a wonderful way to mark 50 years of Sobell House.💙

Dr Donald Richards, a local GP, played a defining role in embedding hospice care within the NHS, championing compassionate support for patients and their families. ✨

Shared by Donald’s children: Dr Imogen Waterson, Prof Sir Mike Richards, Dr Stephen Richards, and Nicky Creed.

“Our father was one of the pioneers behind Sobell House and the development of palliative care in Oxfordshire. It was a time of enormous change, when end-of-life care was only just beginning to be recognised as an area requiring focus and expertise. Working closely with Dr Alistair Laing, he helped establish joint funding between the NHS and Sobell’s charity. Today, Sobell House remains one of a handful of hospices with this distinctive partnership.

A central part of the vision was that the hospice should be located on an NHS hospital site. That is why Sobell House was built within the grounds of the Churchill Hospital, allowing patients access to specialist treatments while benefiting from a calm environment with green space. When Sobell House opened in 1976, its future was uncertain. Our father and his GP partner, Dr Patrick Lawrence, provided 24-hour cover, helping make its opening possible. He believed care should extend beyond hospital beds, supporting the development of the Day Centre. Remembered for his kindness and leadership, he remained devoted to Sobell House throughout his life."

In memory of Dr Donald Richards (1920–1994). 💜
