**When a child is struggling, what’s really going on?**

A child who is anxious, overwhelmed, avoiding school or finding everyday demands difficult may be experiencing challenges for many different reasons.

Sometimes, what we see on the surface is only one part of a much bigger picture.

Difficulties with:

• Attention and concentration
• Sensory demands
• Transitions and changes in routine
• Emotional regulation
• Social communication
• Organisation and executive functioning

can overlap with anxiety and other emotional or behavioural difficulties.

That's why **understanding the whole child matters.**

A good assessment looks beyond one behaviour or one environment. It considers developmental history, strengths, experiences across different settings and the factors that may be contributing to the difficulties a child is experiencing.

The aim isn't simply to put a label on a difficulty.

It's to understand **what is happening, why it may be happening, and what might help.**

With September approaching, if you've noticed increasing difficulties or changes in how your child is coping, the summer can be a useful opportunity to step back and consider the bigger picture.

Sometimes, understanding is the first step towards finding the right support.

**Could understanding now make September easier?**

For some children and young people, the return to school can bring difficulties into sharper focus.

A new school year can mean:

📚 New routines and expectations
⏰ Greater demands on organisation and independence
👥 More complex social situations
🧠 Increased pressure to manage emotions, attention and transitions

Sometimes, **September doesn't create the difficulty — it reveals it.**

A child may have managed well when routines were familiar and adults provided more structure, but struggle when expectations increase.

This is one reason the summer break can be a useful time for parents to pause and consider the bigger picture.

Understanding *why* a child is finding things difficult can be an important first step towards knowing what support might help — whether that's changes at home or school, additional support, or exploring whether a neurodevelopmental assessment may be appropriate.

If you've been wondering whether there is more behind the challenges your child is experiencing, you don't have to wait until September to start exploring your options.

Oxford CBT is now CQC registered.

We’re pleased to share an important milestone for Oxford CBT: our service is now registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

For the families, professionals and organisations we work with, this provides an important additional layer of assurance around the quality and governance of our services.

Our commitment remains the same: to provide high-quality, evidence-based psychological and neurodevelopmental assessment, delivered by experienced clinicians within a robust multidisciplinary framework.

CQC registration reflects the standards, systems and clinical governance we have worked hard to establish as our service continues to grow.

We’re proud of this milestone and grateful to everyone who has helped us reach it.

Quality. Clinical expertise. Accountability.

What is NHS Right to Choose?

If you’ve been waiting for an ADHD or autism assessment, you may have heard of NHS Right to Choose — but what does it actually mean?

For eligible patients in England, Right to Choose may allow you to choose an approved healthcare provider for an NHS-funded assessment, rather than being limited to your local NHS service.

The process is generally:

1. Speak to your GP
Discuss whether an ADHD or autism assessment is appropriate.

2. Ask about Right to Choose
If appropriate, your GP can discuss whether you can choose an approved provider.

3. Choose your provider
If you are eligible, you may be able to choose Oxford CBT.

4. Referral and assessment
Your GP sends the referral and the provider reviews it before the assessment process begins.

At Oxford CBT, our Right to Choose assessments are delivered by an experienced multidisciplinary clinical team, with assessments aligned with NICE guidance.

Eligibility and commissioning arrangements can vary, so we always recommend discussing your individual circumstances with your GP.

Waiting for answers shouldn't feel overwhelming. 💙

If you've been wondering whether you or your child may have ADHD or autism, you may be able to access an NHS-funded assessment through the Right to Choose pathway—without waiting for your local NHS service.

At Oxford CBT, we know this process can feel confusing, so we've made it as clear and supportive as possible.

If your GP agrees that a referral is appropriate, you can ask to be referred to Oxford CBT under the NHS Right to Choose pathway.

Our assessments are:

💙 NHS-funded for eligible patients
💙 Delivered by experienced specialist clinicians
💙 Fully aligned with NICE guidelines
💙 Designed to provide clarity, understanding & practical next steps

We're currently accepting Right to Choose referrals and our team is happy to guide you through the process if you're unsure where to begin.

**We've created a free guide for schools—and we think many parents will find it useful too. 💙**

Over the years, we've had countless conversations with parents, teachers and SENCOs who have asked similar questions:

*How do I know if an assessment is the right next step?*

*What should a comprehensive assessment actually include?*

*How can schools best support children with neurodevelopmental differences?*

Those conversations inspired us to create the **Oxford CBT SENCO Referral Guide**—a free practical resource designed to support schools, while also answering many of the questions we hear from families.

Inside, you'll find guidance on:

💙 recognising neurodevelopmental differences
💙 understanding referral pathways
💙 what makes a high-quality assessment
💙 supporting children who may be masking their difficulties
💙 recommendations that genuinely help in school and at home

Whether you're a parent, teacher, SENCO or someone supporting a young person, we hope it provides clarity and practical insight.

"Everything finally made sense." 💙

Those four words are something we hear surprisingly often after an assessment.

Not because a diagnosis changes a child overnight.

Not because difficulties suddenly disappear.

But because understanding changes everything around them.

Parents often tell us that for the first time they can see how different pieces of the puzzle fit together. Things that once felt confusing, frustrating, or overwhelming begin to make sense.

Schools have a clearer understanding of needs.

Young people often feel more understood.

Families feel more confident about what support to seek next.

One parent recently shared:

💙 "For the first time, we felt that someone had really understood our child. The report didn't just tell us what was happening — it helped us understand why."

For many families, that's the real value of assessment.

Not simply receiving a diagnosis, but gaining clarity, understanding, and a clearer path forward.

📩 If you're wondering whether assessment could help your child or family, we're always happy to answer questions.
