What do all elite athletes have in common?

Sure, they all have talent. And they all devote their lives to training. Testing their body to the max is part of daily life.

But there's another side to being the best, which doesn't get recognised as much. They all take recovery just as seriously as they do their training.

They prioritise sleep, nutrition and downtime, and recognise it's key role in supporting the body through the toughest training sessions, and even tougher games and races.

Cristiano Ronaldo, still dominating professional football at 41, follows an obsessively structured recovery routine: multiple sleep cycles timed around his training sessions, precise nutrition, cryotherapy, and daily massage.

LeBron James famously invests £1.2 million a year in his body. Not on training equipment, but on recovery.

The research backs this up. Nutrition during recovery is essential for avoiding injuries and for return to play. It helps athletes get back on the field sooner and in better shape.

Eating within 30–45 minutes after exercise helps repair muscles and refill energy stores.

And athletes who sleep eight hours or more see performance and accuracy increase by up to 9%.

Training creates the stimulus. Recovery is where the adaptation actually happens.
Whether you're a weekend runner or a competitive athlete, the same principles apply. If your recovery; your sleep, your nutrition, your stress management, isn't getting the same attention as your training, you're leaving performance (and health) on the table.

This is exactly why at Personal Best Therapy, we take a whole-person approach to injury rehabilitation and performance. Because the training session is only part of the picture. 💪

I'm back in the clinic today with a very full diary this week.

Among the range of treatments booked I am treating three clients over today and tomorrow who are all at various stages post knee replacement surgery.

Soft tissue therapy can be a really beneficial boost to the healing process after a knee or hip replacement. Or indeed any joint surgery.

🟡 It helps reduce swelling and inflammation, which is the main thing that restricts returning to normal range of motion.

🟢 It boosts healthy blood flow to the area. Blood carries essential nutrients the body needs for healing and repair to damaged tissue.

🟣 It increases the formation of pliable scar tissue, rather than rigid tissue, and leaves the skin and soft tissue much more moveable, also contributing to improved range and reduced pain.

🔵 In the early stages massage stimulates endorphin release and relaxation of the body. This can help reduce pain and make it easier to move and exercise the joint.

As well as soft tissue therapy I can also help guide you through rehabilitation. Post surgery rehab prescribed in hospital can be limited to the first few weeks or months of recovery. But a joint replacement will need an ongoing strengthening program for a year plus post surgery, to maximise the benefits. Indeed, a strength program is a good thing to employ for life!

Working on range of movement, joint stability, balance and large muscle group strength are all important to consider following joint replacement, in order to get back to sport and activity, whatever your age.

Book a consultation today to see how I can help you get back to your Personal Best Life, following joint replacement surgery.

Got to wave to one of my favourite clients this morning, Angela Morris, as I passed her tall ship, the TS Royalist, currently docked in Weymouth Harbour.

Sadly no time for a coffee as I have a packed schedule (and I was on the wrong side of the dock!). Hiking back to Abbotsbury this morning, and then off to Salisbury to meet friends and celebrate my partner's birthday 🎂

Sometimes, even a long time after injury, the body can get stuck in a cycle of giving pain signals when there isn't any need to.

This is commonly explained by the twin peaks model of pain.

Before injury, if load becomes too much on a muscle, tendon or joint, the body gives a warning, in the form of pain, before it reaches it's limit. This buffer zone between pain and actual tissue damage protects us from over-use injuries like tissue tears or strains.

After injury, the body can sometimes continue to act in "safe mode". The pain warning comes way before the tissues reach their tolerance. We naturally feel that pain, and think we are still injured, but actually the nervous system is just being over cautious.

So how do we overcome this increased buffer zone?

By gradually loading the tissue in safe environments, like controlled training and rehab sessions, we make the tissue stronger and more capable of manageaging load. At the same time we are training the nervous system to recognise safe zones again, and over time the buffer zone returns to normal.

Soft tissue therapy, and individually tailored rehab and prehab programs from Sports Therapists like myself, really are a great way to recover from injury, in a way that works with the body's natural responses. Understanding the nervous system and why pain occurs is important in knowing when you can push yourself and when to ease back.

Contact me today for a consultation, if you are taking a long time to recover from injury, if you suffer with chronic pain conditions or if you are newly injured and want to get back to full fitness in the fastest and safest way possible.

Happy for a few days of sunshine to catch up on my washing for the clinic!

For those who aren't aware of my request regarding bringing towels to appointments, here is a little reminder and explanation.

Before the Covid pandemic I used to use a full roll of paper each and every week covering the bed for hygiene. Plus I used to do 2-3 loads of washing each and every week to ensure every client had a clean sheet and a towel to drape over them, or to cover and protect their clothes from the oil I use.

You can imagine how time consuming that was, not to mention all the water I used. And because the oil reacts badly to heat, I was unable to dry my sheets and towels in a tumble dryer, so my home permanently looked like a launderette with drying linen draped over everything!

During Covid I began requesting that clients bring their own towels to appointments. The requirement for EVERYTHING to be sterilised between each and every appointment meant that my washing demand was huge and so time consuming. It became untenable, at a really difficult amd stressful time.

Asking clients to bring a couple of towels with them to each appointment solved the problem. And so I decided to keep the policy in place after the pandemic was over.

Clients can reuse the same towels over multiple appointments, whereas I have to wash everything after each session. So not only is it time consuming for me, it's also terrible for the environment, when we all should be working to save water and energy where we can.

I hope that gives a little context. Of course, everyone forgets sometimes, and that's not a problem as I always have clean linen available. But I do ask that you try to bring your own if and when you can.

Every little helps, right?

If you haven't previously had treatment with me, or if you haven't looked at your emails last week, you won't be aware of a small change to my prices from 1st June.

It's taken me a long time to implement this change, it's been 3 years since my last price increase, and it's not a decision I've made lightly.

I appreciate that everyone is struggling with ever rising costs. Healthcare has never been more expensive. I appreciate my clients' understanding that I'm in the same boat, and being financially stable is vital for me to be able to continue to offer the best possible service I can.

At the same time, I do believe that healthcare should be affordable and accessible for everyone. I am by far not the most expensive therapist in Torbay, and I intend to keep it that way. I am also happy to discuss options for anyone that feels they need but can't afford my services. There is usually something I can do to help, even if it's just to offer self care advice. So please never hesitate to ask if there is something I can help with.

Moving forwards, I am investing a lot of my time in continuing to develop my knowledge and skills. It's my plan to offer more coaching programs, particularly aimed at clients with chronic health conditions such as cancer or autoimmune conditions, and to those with neurodivergence, to help improve health, nutrition and fitness.

I am so proud of what I have built over the last 10 years of my career, and I'm looking forward to the next 10, and the hundreds more clients I'll be able to help achieve their Personal Best lives.
