Last week, through my work with WOW First Aid Training, I had the privilege of meeting the incredible Debbie Turnbull from River and Sea Sense.

Twenty years ago, she tragically lost her 15-year-old son to drowning. Since then, she has campaigned tirelessly to raise awareness around water safety and prevent other families from experiencing the same heartbreak.

We spoke at length about life-saving skills, water safety, and how we can better protect young people. Her strength, resilience, and determination were inspiring.

This week, she has been constantly in my thoughts. With the half-term holidays and the recent heatwave, we’ve seen far too many tragic incidents in open water — devastating losses that impact families and communities forever.

Please, if you’re spending time near water, take a moment to think about safety. It matters more than we often realise.
