National Grief Awareness Day | 30th August

Grief is different for everyone.

There is no right way to grieve, no set order in which emotions should come, and no point at which somebody should have “moved on”.

For some, grief is overwhelming. For others, it comes quietly. It can appear in the most unexpected moments. A familiar song, an empty chair, a photograph, a particular place, or simply reaching for the telephone to call someone who is no longer there.

And while the days and weeks immediately following a death often bring support from family and friends, grief can remain long after everyone else has returned to their everyday lives.

On National Grief Awareness Day, perhaps the most important thing we can do is remember to be kind, to listen, and to keep checking in.

Sometimes there is nothing that needs to be said. Simply being there can be enough.

In memory of all those we miss, and with thoughts for everyone learning to live with loss.

Sometimes a few handwritten words mean an enormous amount.

We recently received this lovely card from a family we had the privilege of looking after, and their words really touched us.

They described Daniel and the team as “quiet heroes who never seek recognition but quietly make a difference every single day”, and spoke of the kindness, dependability and support they experienced from everyone here.

As funeral directors, much of what we do happens quietly and behind the scenes, and we never expect recognition for simply being there when a family needs us. But receiving something like this is a very special reminder of why we do what we do.

To the family who took the time, at such a difficult point in their own lives, to write these incredibly kind words, thank you. They mean more to us than you probably realise.
