🧡National Diabetes Awareness Week - 8th-14th June💙

8 out of 10 people living with diabetes say they’ve faced negative attitudes because of their diabetes - people passing judgement, making sweeping statements, or blaming and shaming people living with diabetes.

This is diabetes stigma. And it causes real harm to millions.

Signs of Type 1 Diabetes:
🚽 TOILET - needing to pass water more frequently
💧THIRSTY - feeling the need to drink more fluids
💤 TIRED - feeling more tired than usual
⚖ THINNER - noticing a drop in your weight

💙NATIONAL CARERS WEEK - 8th-14th June💙

Carers Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges unpaid carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK. It also helps people who don't think of themselves as having caring responsibilities to identify as carers and access much-needed support. The theme this year is 'Building Carer Friendly Communities'.

There are 5.8 million unpaid carers are in the UK. Every day, they provide support to friends, family members, and loved ones. But are often overlooked, undervalued, and unsupported.

WHO IS A CARER:
A carer is someone who provides unpaid care and support to a family member or friend who has a disability, illness, mental health condition, addiction, or who needs extra help as they grow older. It isn’t someone who volunteers or is employed to provide support.

If you are a carer you can add yourself to our Carer Register via the link below:

❤️💛National Cancer Survivors Day - 7th June💙💚

Held on the first Sunday in June, National Cancer Survivors Day is a celebration for all those who have been diagnosed with cancer and, following treatment, have been given the all clear.

It is a day that is celebrated around the world and a chance to reflect on what cancer patients endure and the effect on their families. It’s also an opportunity to thank the doctors, researchers, fundraisers, and donors who make survival possible.

You can find information and support from Macmillan here:

ℹ WHERE IS BEST? ℹ

If you are away on holiday, you can still contact us at Atlantic - we can arrange a telephone appointment with a clinician. If the doctors feel you require a face-to-face assessment we would direct you to the 111 service for further assistance and to be seen by a surgery local to where you are staying/visiting.

If you require a prescription you can still request this and we can send it to a chemist locally (if you are in England). If you are in Wales or Scotland, please call the 111 service who can assist you. If you are abroad, please approach a walk-in centre.

💚 COELIAC AWARENESS MONTH - MAY 💚

Coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition (a condition in which the body’s immune system mistakes healthy tissues as foreign and attacks them). It is not an allergy or intolerance. Individuals who have coeliac disease can have an adverse response to gluten when they eat it. Damage to the lining of the small bowel is caused by the gluten because the body ends up attacking its cells.

Studies show that approximately 1 in 100 people in the UK have coeliac disease. However, it is thought that nearly 7 out of 10 people remain undiagnosed. This means about half a million people are living with coeliac disease unknowingly.
