2pm Update from PKC on the situation with the potentially dangerous chimney stack reducing access to our practice.

South Methven Street between the High Street and County Place junctions in Perth city centre and Scott Street Car Park (including the pedestrian access from South Methven Street) were closed yesterday due to an unsafe chimney stack on a privately-owned building at 58 South Methven Street.
Following an initial assessment by a structural engineer, a cordon has been established covering the residential and business properties between 58 and 64 South Methven Street.
Further assessment of the building is being undertaken today, with demolition contractors Reigart on-site, to gain further understanding of the situation and help determine the next steps required. This will inform the wider impact on affected property owners, residents, businesses and the roads network and car park.
We have been providing support with temporary accommodation for affected residents where this is required.
Businesses within the cordon area have been contacted by the Council to discuss the situation and are being updated today regarding the reduction in the cordon area and arrangements for deliveries and access to essential work items.
Officers are liaising with businesses both within and outwith the closure area to understand any impacts on trading activity and provide information and support as the situation develops.
To help minimise disruption, "Open for Business" signage will be installed for businesses located within the pedestrian access zone to encourage footfall and highlight that these premises remain accessible. The effectiveness and location of this signage will be kept under review as the situation evolves.
The road closure on South Methven Street has been reduced overnight to both southbound carriageways with vehicle access restored to the northbound carriageway and pedestrian access to the rest of the street. Scott Street Car Park remains closed at present; the closure will be reviewed tomorrow, Friday 23 October with a view to a partial reopening if possible.
Bus services that would normally stop on South Methven Street and County Place are currently being diverted via North Methven Street, Atholl Street, Caledonian Road to Glasgow Road.
Passengers looking to access Stagecoach Services 1/1A/7/7B/8/8S are advised to board their buses on Mill Street or on Glasgow Road at Eilbank Street and those looking to access Stagecoach Service 14/14A are advised to board their buses on Kinnoull Street, Stop T or on Glasgow Road at Eilbank Street.
Stagecoach Service 15/15A will serve Mill Street as a drop off point before continuing to Perth Bus Station.

For anyone with appointments tomorrow, or planning a visit, please allow for extra travel time. Our street will be accessible by foot but will be closed to cars.

Update, 6.30pm: Following an initial assessment of the unsafe chimney stack in South Methven Street, the road will remain closed overnight between the High Street and County Place junctions, as will Scott Street Car Park, in the interests of public safety.

Bus services which normally stop in South Methven Street and County Place have been temporarily rerouted away from this area. Stagecoach have advised that services 1, 1A, 7, 7B, 8, 8S, 14, 14A and 15 have been affected as a result:
- Services travelling from Mill Street towards Glasgow Road will turn right out of Mill Street on to North Methven Street and divert via Atholl Street and Caledonian Road then back onto their normal route.
- Services travelling from Dunkeld Road to Perth bus station will serve Mill Street for alighting before diverting via Scott Street and Canal Street to the bus station.

We will provide a further update on the situation tomorrow (Thursday 22 October 2026).

Update 1.40pm: Police have now closed South Methven Street from St Paul's Square to South Street.

Pedestrian access to Scott Street Car Park from South Street and South Methven Street has been closed due to an unsafe chimney stack on a building on South Methven Street. 🚧

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service is currently on site and has requested an exclusion zone around the building while assessments are carried out.

Vehicles will still be able to exit the car park, provided they are not parked within the exclusion zone. No additional vehicles will be permitted to enter the car park at this time.

VisionPK is offering an exciting RNIB funded See Work Differently Placement for a Communications & Fundraising Assistant at its Sensory Hub in Perth.
This 10-week, part-time placement is specifically designed for people with lived experience of sight loss who are currently not in paid work and are looking to build confidence, skills, and experience in the charity sector.
At VisionPK, the work is focused on supporting people with sight and hearing loss to live more independently through rehabilitation, emotional support, equipment provision, and community services. This role is a chance to help bring those stories to life.
