🎾 Following the recent BBC story about Rafael Nadal’s long-term battle with Müller-Weiss Syndrome, many people have been asking:
🦶 What actually is Müller-Weiss Syndrome?
This rare condition affects the navicular bone in the midfoot and can lead to pain, stiffness, deformity and difficulty walking. In Nadal’s case, it is a condition he managed throughout much of his incredible career.
Symptoms can include:
✔ Midfoot or arch pain
✔ Swelling around the top or inside of the foot
✔ Difficulty with prolonged standing or walking
✔ Progressive changes in foot shape
Because the symptoms can mimic other conditions, diagnosis is not always straightforward. Clinical assessment and imaging are often important in helping identify the underlying cause of persistent foot pain.
While Müller-Weiss Syndrome is uncommon, ongoing foot pain should never be ignored. The right diagnosis is often the first step towards finding the most appropriate treatment and management plan.
At Footcare Scotland, we assess a wide range of foot and ankle conditions and can help determine what may be causing your symptoms.
