🌿 Child Therapy Spaces Available at Juniper Play Therapy 🌿

We currently have a small number of spaces available for children and young people at our bespoke therapy room in Werrington, Peterborough.

Our welcoming, child-centred space has been carefully created to help children feel safe, comfortable and able to express themselves in ways that feel natural to them.

Depending on the child and their needs, sessions may include talking, play and creative approaches, allowing each young person to work at their own pace rather than feeling pressured to find the right words.

We can support children experiencing difficulties including:
✨ Anxiety and worries
✨ Low self-esteem and confidence
✨ Big or overwhelming emotions
✨ Bereavement, loss and change
✨ Family difficulties
✨ Trauma and difficult experiences
✨ Neurodivergence and emotional regulation
✨ School-related difficulties

At Juniper Play Therapy, relationships are at the heart of our work. We take time to understand the individual child and the world around them, working alongside parents and carers where appropriate.

Strengthen Your Relationship with Your Child Through Child-Parent Relationship Therapy (CPRT)

At Juniper Play Therapy, we are delighted to offer Child-Parent Relationship Therapy (CPRT) – a highly effective, evidence-based 10-week programme that empowers parents with practical therapeutic skills to support their child's emotional wellbeing.

Rather than focusing solely on managing behaviour, CPRT helps you build a deeper, more secure relationship with your child. You'll learn four key therapeutic skills that can transform the way you connect, communicate and respond to your child's needs.

Over 10 weekly sessions, you'll be guided through the programme and supported as you practise the skills during special playtimes with your child at home.

CPRT can be particularly beneficial for children who have experienced trauma, attachment difficulties, anxiety, emotional or behavioural challenges, or who are neurodivergent.

✨ Programme details:
• 10-week structured intervention
• Weekly parent sessions with a qualified Play Therapist
• Practical skills to use at home
• Ongoing guidance and support throughout the programme

Investment: £600 for the full 10-session programme.

If you'd like to learn more or discuss whether CPRT is right for your family, we'd love to hear from you.

Big feelings are not the problem.

What matters is whether a child has support, co-regulation, and relational safety while experiencing them.

27/07/2026

Children who have experienced relational trauma often develop protective strategies that were essential for survival.

Hypervigilance, avoidance, controlling behaviours, aggression, compliance, or withdrawal are not random behaviours. They are adaptive responses to environments in which safety, predictability, or connection were compromised.

Therapy does not ask children to abandon these strategies before they are ready.

Instead, through repeated experiences of relational safety, co-regulation, and attuned connection, the child's nervous system gradually learns that protection is no longer needed in the same way.

Healing is not about removing protective responses. It is about helping children develop the safety to discover new ones.

If a child's behaviour becomes difficult, it is often because they are trying to communicate something they don't yet have the words or emotional understanding to express.

As a Play Therapist, it is wonderful to see parents and carers supporting their child through Play Therapy. It takes love, awareness and commitment to step into this journey alongside them.

When a child acts out, shuts down or behaves in ways that frustrate us, our instinct is often to stop or fix the behaviour. In Play Therapy, we ask a different question:

What is the behaviour telling us?

Behaviour is communication.

Children's brains are still developing, so emotions such as anxiety, fear, confusion or trauma can be difficult to put into words. When they feel overwhelmed or unsafe, their nervous system takes over and feelings are often expressed through behaviour rather than language.

Play is a child's natural language. Just as adults use talking therapies, children use play, toys and creativity to communicate what is happening inside.

The behaviour we see is only the tip of the iceberg. Underneath there may be a need for safety, connection, co-regulation or support with overwhelming emotions.

Sometimes behaviour appears to become more challenging after therapy begins. This can be a normal sign that a child feels safe enough for long-held emotions to come to the surface.

During parent consultations, we focus on understanding the whole child rather than simply managing behaviour. Together, we explore what the behaviour might be communicating and how best to respond.

The playroom is a space free from judgement, where children can safely express themselves, process their experiences and gradually develop healthier ways of communicating beyond the therapy room.

"Kids Do Well If They Can" Dr. Ross Greene

Conventional wisdom assumed that kids will do well if they try or want to. This view point then framed any challenging behaviours as a motivational issue, thus creatubg reward and punishment systems. Dr. Greene's perspective challenges this by operating on the assumption that a child would prefer to do well if they had the capability.
