Being a filmmaker can be very up and down. This shoot was very much on the up trajectory! An absolutely amazing team to work with and a budget that meant we could have some really ruddy cool things!

Our film, Literacy as Liberation, is hot off the press and we’re hopeful it will do good in the world. We’re delighted that it will premiere at the UKLA International Conference in Glasgow, on July 3 this year. The documentary, which focusses on inclusive literacies in primary school, reimagines debates around poverty-related attainment gaps by foregrounding literacies as, at times joyful, agentic multimodal communication.

The film was created by Dr Jess Anderson, a research fellow, filmmaker Jay Gearing, seven wonderful primary teachers in Scotland and England, and many individual and community voices. A community screening in Glasgow will follow in August.

Growing up in a deadbeat town as a deadbeat, a neurodivergent, a creative, someone who’s a little lost, you don’t get handed much. You make do, you learn to appreciate what you have. And occasionally something special happens and it suddenly all seems like the stars are aligned, you have your people and they have you. That’s a rarity but that happened when Metal Peterborough arrived here. You all of a sudden belong. You’re not a weirdo on the periphery. And that changes your course forever.

Over time of course people move on, things change and tonight saying goodbye to the last of the ‘old guard’ was for me, super emotional. Things have transpired over the years that make creatives less and less able to just ‘be’ but you gave us respite. You made it all seem possible. They’ll be new chapters of course but what you gave us is immeasurable and will be with us forever. (It’s not a eulogy I know but Christ on a bike it kinda feels like one). Good luck Ruth. And my immense love and gratitude to you, Mark, and Sarah as well xx

Come along to discover how working class filmmakers are capturing British life today, as well as see a BFI NETWORK filmmaker bring their story to life. Stick around afterwards for a Q&A with some of the filmmakers about their creative process, funding journey, and how to make connections in the industry.

‘Unreasonable’ by Jay Gearing explores disability, creativity and activism, and marks 30-years since the introduction of the Disability Discrimination Act.

It looks at the importance of programmes such as Peterborough Presents’ RAD programmes in bringing together a collective voice, how the arts / creativity can challenge perceptions and create change. A year ago today I lost my mum.

It was an out of the blue loss, my mum definitely had a good few years left in her. It was a shock and I’m still feeling and struggling with that loss today. In this episode, in a role reversal, I talk to my good friend and past podcast guest Anita Nayyar about my mum, what happened and the grieving process over the year. This seems the logical place to end the series so this will be the final episode. Thanks so much to those that have supported the podcast and have listened over the years, it’s been a gift for me and my family. Not only have I learnt about so much grief and have gained a better understanding but I’ve also had the immense privilege of talking to those that have shared their stories with me in such a generous and intimate way. 🚨Today’s the day🚨 — our brand new poetry video for kids, The Pigeon Police, is live!

Huge thanks to Jay Gearing at Red7Productions (he also plays my brother in the video), Amanda Rigby for creating our pigeons, and Red and Dillon for all the brilliant sound effects.

We also had amazing acting appearances and support throughout from Suzanne Tuck, Diana Steele, Toyah Burgess and local poetry legen Hilary Steele— and I’m especially grateful to Lucy for letting us turn the house into a film studio and bird-poo production centre. Thank you! 🐦💩.

The video is free to watch and use wherever you like. I’m hoping it’ll be handy for teachers/anyone looking to share some poetry whilst also making kids laugh. To go with it, I’m working on a free PDF of the poem plus a free activity pack for teachers, students and home-schoolers — a chance to unpack the poem and really get to the 'bottom' of things.
