When you’ve done something repeatedly without getting injured, it starts to feel safe.
At work, this patient had jumped down from roofs many times without incident. One wet landing was enough to result in a severe open fracture requiring surgery.
The operation repaired and stabilised the fracture, but that was only one part of his recovery.
Rehabilitation now focuses on what the injury, surgery and period of reduced activity have affected: mobility, strength, balance, load tolerance and confidence using the leg again.
Recovery after a serious injury isn’t simply about waiting for the bone to heal. It’s about progressively rebuilding function and helping the person return safely to everyday life. That’s the part of recovery people often don’t see.
Know someone who always says, “I’ve done it loads of times and I’ve been fine”? Send this to them.
