One of the remarkable things about Sharon Wheeler’s ScarWork is how often clients discover that old scars have been quietly affecting their movement, comfort, and wellbeing for years. Sometimes the body adapts so gradually to restriction that we don’t realise how much tension we’ve been carrying - until it’s released.

After treatment, this client experienced improved mobility through their left side and shoulder, reduced tension around the rib cage, and a renewed sense of connection through the abdomen where she had previously felt restricted and disconnected.

ScarWork is a gentle, specialised approach that works on scars and adhesions via light touch work to the fascia, to help restore ease, mobility, and balance within the body.

This gentleman came in as a volunteer scar model for me to demonstrate ScarWork to the students in Shanghai. He had been in an accident and had quite a few scars as a result.
I worked on most of the scars. There was not much visible difference in the scar over the tibia, but in the photos afterwards, there was visible change to his toes - foot shape, toe alignment and toe spacing - as you can see. This improved his gait and created adaptive change through his body.

After Shanghai, China, and Taichung, Taiwan, our Principal, Jan Trewartha, has now arrived in Taipei - the final stop on her first ScarWork teaching tour this year.

Throughout, and now in Taiwan’s vibrant capital city, Jan has been sharing the intricacies of Sharon Wheeler’s ScarWork with bodywork therapists, doctors, physiotherapists and surgeons, all eager to deepen their understanding of fascia, scars, and the body’s remarkable ability to heal when treated with light touch work.

Taipei is the perfect place to conclude this exciting journey, bringing together culture, connection, and education in one dynamic city. Jan will be back again in October and loves these regular teaching visits.

Scars are more than skin deep.

After teaching Sharon Wheeler’s ScarWork globally for over a decade, our Principal, Jan Trewartha, has seen many, many scars. She has also seen many hundreds of people experience not only improved mobility, posture, and movement, but often significant pain relief too. This is because ‘scar models’ are invited to the training courses for free work with the supervised students, and give feedback after the Clinical Practice sessions.

Why might this happen? Because scars, and the adhesions that usually develop, can disrupt the body’s fascial network, creating tension patterns that affect alignment, nerves, fluid movement, and overall function throughout the body. Even small scars can have surprisingly far-reaching effects.

When scars are treated with the right approach, freeing up their compressive, restrictive effect can create profound changes in comfort, movement, and wellbeing.

ScarWork is not simply “scar massage” - it’s a highly specialised technique designed to work with the fascia and restore balance within the body.

If you’ve ever wondered whether an old scar could still be affecting you, it may be worth exploring.
