Camel Pose isnāt the only way to calm your nervous system šŖāØ
Camel Pose (Ustrasana) is often described as a āheart opener,ā but its real magic isnāt because it unlocks a hidden energy centreāitās because it asks you to breathe, move with awareness, and tolerate an intense stretch.
A slow, steady breath can encourage a shift toward a calmer state by supporting the parasympathetic nervous system. Gentle, longer exhales are also associated with increased vagal activity, involving the vagus nerve, which helps regulate heart rate, digestion, and our stress response.
But hereās something worth rememberingā¦
You donāt need an intense backbend to experience these benefits.
If Camel Pose feels uncomfortable, overwhelming, or simply isnāt right for your body, gentler poses like Sphinx, Supported Fish, Puppy Pose, or even lying on a bolster while focusing on slow breathing can create many of the same nervous system benefits.
Yoga isnāt about achieving the deepest shape.
Itās about creating the conditions for your body to feel safe enough to soften, breathe, and regulate.
Your nervous system doesnāt care how impressive the pose looks. š
