When it comes to parenting there seems to be all sorts of 'rules'. Plenty of things you should do and many more that you shouldn't.

Of course it is for all parents to choose what is right or wrong in their family as we are all different and all our little ones are different.

Which of the 'rules' have you broken?

If you think you could be experiencing postnatal depression try and reach out for some help or support.

You could speak to friends or family, your health visitor or GP or find some online groups. If you can, getting out to groups and finding other mums you connect with can be so helpful. It can be hard to make that first step but most people are so lovely and supportive.

If you are looking for more information on postnatal depression PANDAS is a good starting point https://pandasfoundation.org.uk/

Though the recommended room temperature for babies is 16 – 20°C, keeping your baby's room temperature in this range can be harder in summer or in a heatwave!

We want to remind you that in really hot weather, it's fine to dress your baby in just a nappy, or a short sleeve vest. Research shows that babies are safer being cooler than being too hot, as overheating increases the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

It might also help to:
- Open the bedroom door and a window, if it’s safe to do so, to allow the air to flow.
- Use a fan to cool the room, but don’t aim it directly towards the baby.
- Keep curtains closed in the daytime so the room doesn’t heat up as much.
- Use a thermometer to check the room is the right temperature – as it’s hard to guess.

But even after doing all of the above in this heat, it can be frustrating when the room is still hot and it's out of your control. So for peace of mind, continue following all of our safer sleep guidance 👉 link in bio

What were the names you didn't use?

The ones you didn't feel brave enough for or just changed your mind last minute. Maybe you can inspire some parents with your ideas.

When I talk about feeding in antenatal classes almost everyone says

I want to try to breastfeed
I hope to breastfeed
I will breastfeed if I can
I would like to breastfeed

and then BUT......

It's ok if it doesn't work for us
I know some people can't
I know it can be really hard

I can't remember the last time someone said 'I am going to breastfeed'. We know so many people who have had tough journeys that expectations are low. Women no longer expect to breastfeed, they want to try but they expect it be hard and not work out for them.

I also meet plenty of people (sometimes the same ones I spoke to antenatally) who discovered that once baby was in their arms it really did matter, it wasn't ok if it didn't work for them. The emotions around feeding your baby can be huge and it is a whole new skill for you and your baby to learn.

Getting ahead of the game and doing some learning before they arrive can make a huge difference. Immediately after birth you are not at your best for taking in information and learning something new! Learn now before baby arrives, it might not all make sense but you will have the information ready for when you need it.

You can now access my Infant Feeding Workshop online, whenever you want to. Watch before baby arrives and watch again when they are here and you want a recap.

It covers so much;
Why breastfeeding is recommended
What to expect with a newborn
How breastmilk production works
Positions for you and baby, and getting the latch right
Expressing and bottle feeding
Troubleshooting common challenges

All in 11 bite sized videos so you can easily watch the bits you want to again. That is more than 2 hours of content to help you feed your baby in the way that is right for you.

And because I really want everyone to have this information (stats tell us 80% stop breastfeeding before they want to) it is only £29 and you can access and watch as many times are you need to, and if baby is here already and you are struggling it is still worth buying (and message me to get in touch with your local support groups)

What was your baby's first food?

Did you start with a carefully selected first food, offer a few different things, or did they just grab something from your plate and make their own choice?
