For those not familiar with hearing aids, it’s easy to assume that they work in a similar way to glasses for poor eyesight – correcting vision and restoring it to our ‘factory setting’. In fact, despite the incredible technology available today, many hearing aid users still won’t hear the way someone with normal hearing does – they will have better access to sound, but they can’t recreate the hearing that has been lost.
So if you’re living with a hearing aid user, they may still need you repeat words, and they may still mis-hear what you say. It doesn’t mean there is something wrong with the equipment itself, but the job they are trying to do is much harder than perhaps many of us realise.
