Today I’m a bit like this thistle. Prickly but trying to blossom.
One month ago today my dad died after a long battle with cancer and it’s been a tough time.
We’re now in the next stage where everyone is trying to adjust and come to terms with him not being on this plane any more.
I know I’m lucky that I have an unusual relationship with death and the afterlife and I can communicate with him still. It doesn’t make it less painful but it does mean it’s less scary for me.
Immediately after death is an easier time to connect and communicate. After a few weeks that starts to change, as the person is going through a process the other side which allows them to understand where they are and begin their understanding of their life.
Then, it can take months if not years before the easier communication happens again. It is unpredictable when that happens as it’s very much dependent on the individual’s journey.
So if you’re also grieving and wondering when you’ll get a sign from your loved one, don’t worry if it takes time. Initially, it’s likely to be more subtle, so watch out for the little things. As time passes, it becomes more easy for them to give bigger signs, but that often coincides with when we stop looking for the signs as we get on with life!
As for me. I’m doing ok. I think about him daily and miss knowing he’s there and speaking to him, but I am at peace with that feeling. It still hurts but I don’t fight it. Allowing it to pass through me and give thanks for the love that I experienced that means that I now have the pain. I’m starting to blossom again and look to the future. To treasure the joy that is also a big part of life.
I hope that wherever you are in your grief journey, that you’re able to see the joy as well as feel the pain. We walk the path of grief, knowing that they always walk beside us if we make space for them.
