Your criticism isn’t just a one time thing. It’s the voice they’ll hear when they stand alone. The one that whispers they’re not enough. Years from now, they’ll still be arguing with you in their head.

'It's not just an inconvenience': We've underestimated the health impacts of heavy periods - BBC Future

As women have fewer children and more periods, heavy menstrual bleeding is becoming more of a health burden.

Denotation and Sexual abuse.

'Why Didn't You Tell Me?'

It is almost always the first question.

Why didn't you tell me? and it lands like a verdict of blame.

For many, inside that question is an assumption: that the child had the words, had the safety, or understanding, the cognitive ability, the thought process or ability to regulate horrendous sexaully abusing behaviours to tell an adult.

That she or he weighed it up and chose silence.

And so, in the moment of disclosure, the weight shifts back onto the one who carried it alone.

Children rarely tell. They test. They go quiet in a particular way, or loud in a particular way. They stop eating, or start staying out, or attach themselves to something. In lived experience some of my self harm, I threw a chair at school.

Children might say I don't like going to his or her house and hope someone says okay, help me understand that.

Disclosure is not usually a sentence. It is a series of small signals sent to adults, parents, teachers, friends or relatives.

So the question has to change. Not why didn't you tell me.

The question now.

How do I learn to prevent sexual abuse.

The questions at disclosure
What didn't I see?
Why didn't I ask?
What didn't I hear?

These are harder questions, because they require something of us.

They ask families and professionals to examine the moment the referral didn't go in, the concern that got recorded and closed. They ask parents to sit with the discomfort of having missed something. They ask a society that sexualises girls and boys at four, eleven or thirteen and then calls them risk-takers at fourteen to look at what it built.

The bystanding behaviours need a gentle challenge.
