For Sonja, being a Community Nurse Specialist is about treating every patient with the same compassion and care you would want for your own family.

Working in hospice care means being there for people at one of the most important times in their lives. It means listening to what matters, supporting the people they love and helping make sure they receive the care, dignity and comfort they deserve.

As Sonja says, "working for a hospice that treats every patient like their own family is everything."

After more than 14 years at St Luke's, Partnerships Manager Nina Wearne is retiring, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy of support for local hospice care.

Inspired by her own experience of the difference hospice care can make, Nina has spent over a decade helping to raise millions of pounds, building lasting relationships with supporters, businesses and community groups across Plymouth and beyond.

From leading fundraising teams to rolling up her sleeves at events, Nina has always believed that every donation matters because every donation helps families facing some of life's most difficult moments.

"Fundraising is about sharing ideas, building relationships and helping people understand the difference their support can make."

As she prepares for her next chapter, we look back on a remarkable career dedicated to helping others.

A huge thank you to Joseph Arkle for taking on the incredible challenge of cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats - covering around 100 miles a day for 10 consecutive days in memory of his father, John.

Motivated by the compassionate care St Luke’s provided to John at home in his final weeks, Joseph set out to honour his dad’s memory while raising vital funds for local hospice care.

Thanks to the generosity of family, friends, patients and supporters, Joseph has raised an amazing £2,675 - more than double his original target.

Well done, Joseph, and thank you for helping ensure more families receive the same kindness and support that meant so much to yours.

What makes St Luke’s a special place to work?

It’s the people.

People who support each other, celebrate each other’s successes and bring compassion, dedication and a shared sense of purpose to work every day.

Our recent Recognition Awards gave us the chance to celebrate just some of the incredible individuals and teams who make St Luke’s what it is.

Across seven award categories, we recognised colleagues and volunteers who have gone above and beyond. From delivering outstanding care and finding new ways of working, to supporting our shops, fundraising and wider community.

But behind every award is a team of people working together to make a difference for local people and their families.

At St Luke’s, everyone has a part to play and every contribution matters.
