Ashtanga Yoga Plymouth

Ashtanga Yoga Plymouth Ashtanga Yoga is a dynamic and energetic form of yoga in which postures are linked in a flowing sequ you just need to start.

My aim is to make Ashtanga Yoga accessible to everyone in friendly, authentic, inclusive, affordable classes, helping you to discover all the endless benefits to both mental and physical health of this very traditional and innately wise practice. The focus on linking breath with movement as well as 'gaze points', means the senses are actively drawn inward allowing practitioners to move through

the Ashtanga primary series with complete awareness and presence, transforming the physical practice into a 'moving meditation' allowing us to reach a deep state of concentration and cultivate an awareness of the subtlest physical and mental aspects of our being.

The Benefits of Ashtanga Yoga
Improve flexibility and posture
Increase strength of bones, joints
Increase muscle tone
Improve cardiovascular fitness, lung efficiency
Reduce body fat and increase metabolism
Regulate blood pressure
Reduce stress, anxiety and depression
Increase focus and creativity
Improve quality of sleep
Increase happiness! I discovered Ashtanga Yoga quite late in life, and immediately noticed that yoga differed from other forms of exercise in the way it had a positive effect on the emotional as well as the physical state. As a secondary school teacher for 25 years, I felt it a natural progression to train to teach yoga and I was privileged to be able to train with Brian Cooper, renowned author, founder of The Yoga Alliance UK, and one of the best Ashtanga Yoga instructors in Europe. I love being able to share this practice and to watch students progress. The great thing is that it is accessible to everyone … you don’t have to be flexible or have any experience to start ..

Soaring through summer at 60 and pretty pleased with my recent progress in aerial acrobatics 🙃🤸‍♀️🎪✨

When I first stepped onto the mat to try Ashtanga yoga in my 40s, I knew immediately I was building strength, flexibility, and focus…but I never imagined it would take me all the way up into the air 🤸‍♀️ Turns out those endless Chaturangas were quietly helping train me to hang upside down with confidence 🙃

Proof that age is just a number and your body is capable of incredible things at any decade.

Grateful for this amazing practice that keeps me grounded so I can fly high.

Here’s to trying new things, pushing boundaries, and building the confidence to keep reaching higher 💛💪

Ready to build your own strength and focus? My Ashtanga Yoga classes are starting back from September 6th and I’d love to see you on the mat….Every Body, Age, Ability is welcome 😀🧘‍♀️🧘🏻‍♂️🙏

Yep! The same Krishnamacharya lineage runs through my own practice and teaching....grounded in tradition and no fluffiness or woo-woo 😉

When I started practicing, I thought spirituality had to announce itself.

I was attending many different classes.
The teachers who opened class with chakras, poetry, half-hour stories — sometimes too much bláblábla and frufrufru — I thought they were the spiritual ones. The Iyengar teacher I was practicing with never did that. Alignment, mechanics, structure. Nothing else. I quietly decided she wasn’t spiritual.

I was wrong.

Time passed. I came to understand that spirituality cannot be taught. We can teach religion, rituals, techniques to calm the mind — but spirituality transcends all logical knowledge.

Now I see her teaching for what it was, straight from the source — the same Krishnamacharya lineage that runs through my own practice today. And with so many new styles and trends claiming to hold spirituality, many beginners are misled.

Not everything that shines is gold.
Not everything that smells of Palo Santo is spiritual.

Scientific research shows that yoga transforms your brain neuro-plasticity (brain wiring) facilitating more happy thoughts and feelings, and decreasing a whole range of unpleasant ones.

Ashtanga yoga in particular, with all its forward folds, and then counter balance backbends, stimulates important nerves in the brain resulting in a feeling of calmness, that ‘yoga stoned' feeling we know so well 😊

Finding balance in beautiful Brittany 🌞
Now back from a wonderful break and I’m really looking forward to seeing you for the last full week of classes before my summer break 💛

We arrived in Roscoff to a stunning sunrise and dolphins! 🐬 🌅 And spent a lovely week exploring the beautiful white (and often wonderfully empty) beaches of western Brittany, had cooling swims in gorgeous turquoise seas, and enjoyed bike rides and coastal walks, visiting quaint villages and standing stones 🌊🚲 🌞

And now…..back to yoga!

Tomorrow at 10am we’ll be practising in the lovely Secret Garden at RWY🌿....Every Body welcome 😀🧘‍♀️🧘‍♂️🙏

Why Practice the Same Sequence?

Some people say Ashtanga Yoga is repetitive. As it's the same sequence each practice.

But for practitioners, that repetition isn't a limitation….it's the doorway to transformation.

The fixed series of postures, synchronised with steady breath and mindful movement, gradually settles the body and mind into rhythm.
Over time, the nervous system settles into the parasympathetic "rest and digest" state, where the senses grow quiet and the mind shifts into alpha brainwaves.
And the practice evolves into a moving meditation.

Modern science supports what Ashtangis have known for centuries - the body opens most effectively through relaxation, not force. The Ashtanga method with its very familiar series creates the perfect environment for that ease.

What may seem repetitive from the outside becomes, for the practitioner, a powerful path to inner peace, vitality, and lasting transformation.

As taught by Patanjali: "Yoga chitta vritti nirodhah" - Yoga is the stilling of the fluctuations of the mind. And Ashtanga’s repetition is its living embodiment.

Join us on Sunday morning in the gorgeous Secret Garden at RWY (only if temp is less than 22°) and experience how Ashtanga Yoga can cultivate strength, calm, clarity, and a deeper connection with yourself....

✨ Every Body welcome. No matter your age, flexibility, or experience, your practice begins exactly where you are 😀🧘‍♀️🧘‍♂️🙏
