The internet isn't a very nice place right now, with lots of polarised views and pitting women and midwives against one another, creating a supposed fight.

Well I call BS. Yes we passionately support and protect physiological birth and have a skill set in that, but you need to know normal to understand abnormal.

Women have the right to understand their options in a trauma informed way that creates safe, nurturing care to allow them to make choices that feel right for them. Whether that's a homebirth or a planned caesarean, deciding to opt in to an induction or declining interventions when they understand the risk/benefit and alternatives on offer.

We stand with women to have a birth that leaves them whole, mind, body and soul. The current system is failing women in the most basic provision.

So our wish for the narrative currently online in the birth world? Can we all stop fighting please. We all want better for women. This is about a system that fails to provide adequate choice, staffing, care and support that is trauma informed and holistic. I have worked in the system when I did provide that. I believe it can again.

Homebirth is not the problem, normal birth is not the problem. .

A system that is not listening to women IS the problem.

A system that funnels women through a conveyor belt of care, not seeing them as unique individuals, staff overworked not having the time for nuanced conversation, services not running adequately. Swiss cheese where women fall through the gaps and are harmed.

So if you want to know what our favourite kind of birth is........it's the one where you being alive is NOT the baseline, it's the one where you walk away trauma free, feeling in control of your choices and able to enjoy motherhood feeling empowered, listened to and like YOU MATTER.

Over and out with love and oxytocin

It's mentioned at least 75 times in the latest report and yet the headlines are still focussing on women being too old too far blah blah blah.

Why does continuity matter?

Because the themes coming out are systematically not listening to families and dehumanisation of women - continuity is protective of this. When you are known by your care provider trusting relationships from - this is also trauma informed as a way of caring for families (you only need to tell your story once)

And because continuity has repeatedly demonstrated that almost every measurable outcome is improved when women and families are cared for in this model. That's less morbidity (harm) and mortality (death) for women and babies. That's both physical and psychological. There is a Cochrane review available for you to read on this!

So if we really wanted to improve maternity services we would be putting this back on the agenda.

At the moment fragmented care is the norm. Care is centralised and reductive.

If you want care that is the opposite of this then you may need to look outside of what the NHS is offering. There are some pockets of the NHS doing this and doing this well, so request to be cared for in this way and if they can't ask why.

In the meantime my DMs are open 💕

It's ok to want more than just a healthy baby as your baseline.

You deserve to be held and treated with the kind of care that keeps you both physically as well as psychologically safe.

Continuity of care and expert midwifery care provides this. Seeking this out is not a betrayal to the NHS. It's recognising that you need more than just the basic care provision.

We know that sometimes women and babies require intervention to provide safe care - this is why employing a highly skilled independent midwifery team to care for you keeps you and your baby safe. We are trained to recognise when intervention might be warranted or required. But we also work in a way that treats you as the unique individual you are. With trust, time, nuance and continuity of care. This is evidence based to ENHANCE safety and IMPROVE outcomes.

This is why we work in this way.
